Why the Moon and not the Sun

The classical match, Ashtakuta, scores eight factors (kutas) worth 36 points in total, and every one of them is counted from the two Moons: four from their signs, four from their nakshatras. The Sun sign of Western astrology plays no part. If you do not know your Rashi, the chart calculator shows it from your birth date and, if the Moon changed sign that day, your birth time.

What a sign pair can and cannot tell

A Rashi holds two and a quarter nakshatras, so two people with the same pair of Rashis can score anywhere from low to high. That is why every page gives a range rather than one number, and the share of combinations that reach 18, the classical minimum. The text describes the emotional styles of the two Moons, which the signs do show well. Whether a marriage works calls for both full charts: the 7th house, Venus and Jupiter, the navamsha, Mangal Dosha and the dashas both people are running.

How the numbers were made

Each Moon was placed in turn across every pada of its sign, with two points per pada because vashya changes in the middle of a sign, and every pair was scored with the same code the JyotiSoft bot uses for a real match. The classical table is written for a man and a woman, and three of its kutas (varna, vashya and tara) are not symmetric, so every page shows both orders. For other couples, many astrologers simply read both directions.

Doshas without fear

Two kutas can drop to zero: Bhakoot (7 points), when the Moons stand 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other, and Nadi (8 points), when both nakshatras share a nadi. Both have classical exceptions. A zero is a reason to look closer at the two charts, not a verdict on a relationship. The pages say when JyotiSoft's default rules cancel a Bhakoot dosha, and that the exception is a later convention.
