Muhurat: choosing an auspicious time

Muhurat is the Vedic art of choosing the time for an important beginning: a wedding, a move, buying a home or car, launching a business. A good muhurat weighs the panchang of the day, a nakshatra suited to the event and the person's own chart.

Why choose a time

Jyotish holds that a beginning has a chart of its own: something started at a favourable moment unfolds more easily. In India a muhurat is chosen for weddings, housewarmings, starting school, opening a business, buying a vehicle — even a child's first haircut.

Nakshatras for events

The classics group the nakshatras by nature. Fixed (Rohini and the three Uttaras) suit what should last: weddings, foundations, buying land. Movable (Swati, Punarvasu, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha) suit journeys and vehicles. Soft (Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Revati) suit art, friendship and romance. Swift (Ashwini, Pushya, Hasta) suit trade, treatment and study. Sharp and fierce nakshatras suit decisive or destructive tasks.

What is excluded

Unfavourable for beginnings are the day's Rahu kalam, Vishti (Bhadra) karana, the Vyatipata and Vaidhriti yogas, rikta tithis (4, 9, 14), and — for weddings — periods when Venus or Jupiter is combust. In north India the months when the Sun is in Sagittarius or Pisces (kharmas) are traditionally avoided for weddings.

The personal part

A generally good day may not suit a particular person. Tara bala checks how the day's nakshatra relates to your Moon nakshatra; chandra bala which sign from your Moon the day's Moon occupies. For major events a chart of the moment is cast too: a strong lagna, benefics in kendras, an empty 8th house.
