How we calculate and write
This page is the passport of our calculations and the rules our articles follow. If you are comparing JyotiSoft with another program, or want to know whether to trust a text, start here.
In short
- Calculation: apparent positions, sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsha, true node for Rahu, whole-sign houses.
- Every date quoted in the articles is recalculated by automated tests with the same engine that draws the charts.
- Numbers and tables on the pages come from the engine, not from hand-copied text.
- Later conventions (Kala Sarpa, Pitra dosha, Manglik from the Moon and Venus) are labelled as later tradition.
- We promise no outcomes, make no diagnoses and sell no rituals; a gemstone we give as the tradition does, from the whole chart.
- Articles are signed by the JyotiSoft editorial team; we have no invented authors.
What we calculate with
| Ephemeris | professional ephemeris (accurate to fractions of an arc-second) |
|---|---|
| Zodiac | sidereal, Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha: 24°13′ in 2026 |
| Planet positions | apparent: where the planet is seen from the Earth, with light-time and aberration, as in the Indian Astronomical Ephemeris and Drik Panchang (the default since 14 October 2026) |
| Rahu and Ketu | true node in the charts; transit dates also give the mean node, first, as most calendars print it |
| Combustion | the orbs of BPHS ch. 7: Moon 12°, Mars 17° (8° retrograde), Mercury 14° (12°), Jupiter 11°, Venus 10° (8°), Saturn 16° |
| Houses | whole sign (the whole lagna sign is the 1st house) |
| Dashas | Vimshottari; the dasha year is the sidereal year (about 365.26 days) |
| Birth time | the time zone and daylight saving of the birthplace on that exact date (IANA time zone database) |
| Chart style | North or South Indian, as you prefer; the content is the same |
The calculation is checked against Drik Panchang's published dates and, on reference charts, against Jagannatha Hora. Jagannatha Hora keeps geometric positions, so its degrees can differ from ours by up to a minute of arc; any other disagreement is a bug, and the tests catch it. Why other programs may show something else is explained in why programs show different charts.
How the numbers in articles are checked
The dates of transits, retrograde periods and eclipses that the articles mention are kept in a table, and automated tests recalculate every one of them with the engine each time the site is built. If a date in the text disagrees with the calculation, the site does not build. The tables of nakshatras, planets, houses and muhurats, the lesson examples and the calculators' values are built from the engine, not copied by hand.
How the texts are written
Articles are prepared by the JyotiSoft editorial team with the help of a language model. Every statement about calculation is checked against the engine, and classical statements against the texts: the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Varahamihira's Brihat Jataka, Saravali, Phaladeepika and the Jaimini Sutras. When a rule comes from later tradition or modern practice, we say so. The Russian and English versions are written in their own language; the others are translated and reviewed.
Later tradition and disputed points
Some popular ideas do not appear in the classical texts or are described there differently: Kala Sarpa, Pitra dosha, Manglik counted from the Moon and Venus, the frightening readings of Sade Sati. We neither mock these traditions nor use them to frighten; we label them in one sentence: a later tradition, counted differently by different schools. Where schools differ (ayanamsha, house systems, varga variants), we say which option we chose and why.
What we do not do
We do not promise events or dates, give medical, legal or financial diagnoses, sell rituals or “dosha removal”, or invent authors and reviews. Astrology in JyotiSoft is a way to think about your life on the basis of an exact calculation, not a substitute for a doctor, a lawyer or a financial adviser.
How answers in the bot are made
In the bot and the Mini App the engine calculates the chart, and a language model only writes the text from those facts and the rules of the chosen school. So the same question about the same chart leads to the same conclusion, and the answer shows which placements it rests on.
If you find a mistake
Write to the bot @JyotiSoftBot with the page and what is wrong. Corrected articles get a new date in the “Updated” line at the bottom of the page.
