    How to analyse your chart?

Not sure where to start? Go through the seven steps in order and you will gradually learn how your chart is built.

Step 1. Lagna: where the chart begins

The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. Houses are counted from it, so the reading starts there.

Step 2. Lagnesha: where your personal energy is directed

The lagnesha is the graha that rules the sign of your lagna. Find its house and sign, the planets beside it and those that aspect it: that area of life is closely tied to your personality. In the result above it is the lagna lord line.

Step 3. House lords: one method for any area of life

Any area of life is read with one method: find its house, the sign on it and that sign's lord, then see where the lord stands and which planets sit in the house itself. If a question touches several areas, compare several houses.

    Houses (bhavas)

Step 4. The nine grahas: the role of each planet in your chart

The planet shows what is active, and the house shows the area of life. A planet in its own or exalted sign tends to work smoothly; a debilitated one needs more effort. Tradition reads a retrograde planet as more inward and slower.

Step 5. The Moon and the nakshatra: your inner world

In Jyotish the Moon sign and nakshatra describe the mind and the habitual way of reacting (see Moon sign vs Sun sign).

Step 6. Rahu and Ketu: the axis of growth

Rahu and Ketu always stand opposite each other. Find their houses, their signs and the lords of those signs: the axis links two areas of life between which you grow.

    Rahu · Ketu

Step 7. Vimshottari dasha: life periods and what matters now

The Vimshottari dasha names the planet whose themes are in the foreground now. A fuller walk-through: how to read a Vedic chart.

    What the calculator shows

From the date, time and place of birth it draws your sidereal chart in the North or South Indian layout and lists where each of the nine grahas stands: sign, degree, house, nakshatra and pada. Retrograde planets carry the mark ℞; a planet in its own sign, exalted or debilitated, is named in words. Below the table the chart is explained in plain language — what each planet stands for and which area of life its house covers — and the dasha running now is named.

Why your chart may differ from other sites

Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsha, whole-sign houses and the true lunar node — the same settings as the JyotiSoft bot, Mini App and PDF reading. Western (tropical) services place the planets about 24° later in the zodiac, so your Sun sign usually differs. Other Vedic programs may use another ayanamsha (Raman, KP), another house system or the mean node, which is another source of differences. In detail: why different sites show different charts and the ayanamsha.

If you do not know the birth time

Tick “Time unknown”. The Moon is then taken at noon, and the lagna and houses are not calculated, so the House column and the lagna lines disappear. The slow planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) and usually the Sun are still placed correctly; the Moon moves about 13° a day, so if it changed sign on your birthday, the calculator tells you. To narrow the time down, see a chart without a birth time and rectification.

    Questions

    Is the chart calculator free?
Yes. The chart, the table and the explanations are free and need no sign-up. A full reading — a long interpretation, the periods and a year ahead — is the paid PDF or the bot.
Why is my Sun sign different from my newspaper horoscope?
Because Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac: the signs are shifted by the ayanamsha, about 24° today. Someone born on 5 April is Aries in a newspaper horoscope and Pisces here.
Is this a North or a South Indian chart?
Both. By default it is North Indian: the houses keep fixed places and the lagna is at the top. The switch above the chart shows the South Indian chart, where the signs stay fixed. The data is the same in a different frame.
    What does ℞ mean?
Retrograde: seen from Earth the planet appears to move backward through the zodiac. The lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu are almost always marked, because they move backward by nature.
Which settings does the chart use?
Sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsha, whole-sign houses, true lunar node and the Vimshottari dasha from the Moon's nakshatra — the same as in the bot, the Mini App and the PDF.
