Rahu Kaal today

Rahu Kaal (Rahu kalam) is the eighth of the daylight that tradition keeps free of new beginnings. Below are today's Rahu kalam, Yamaganda and Gulika in local time for ten cities, counted from each city's own sunrise and sunset; open a city for its full panchang or go to the next day.

How to read the table

Each row is one city and today's date in that city. The three columns are the three periods of the day that the panchang marks as unfavourable for starting something new: Rahu kalam, Yamaganda and Gulika (Gulika kalam). The times are local and follow the city's sunrise and sunset, so they move by a few minutes every day and differ between cities on the same date. The city name opens its full panchang for today: tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, sunrise, sunset and the good windows of the day. The last column opens the same city for tomorrow.

How Rahu Kaal is calculated

The daylight from local sunrise to local sunset is divided into eight equal parts. Rahu kalam takes one of them, fixed for each weekday: the 2nd part on Monday, the 7th on Tuesday, the 5th on Wednesday, the 6th on Thursday, the 4th on Friday, the 3rd on Saturday and the 8th on Sunday. Yamaganda and Gulika are counted the same way from other parts. Because the day is longer in summer and shorter in winter, a part is not always 90 minutes. The table under the cities shows the classical times for a day from 06:00 to 18:00; the step-by-step method and a calculator are in the article on Rahu kalam.

What to do and not to do

Tradition does not start important new things in Rahu kalam: a journey, a purchase, signing a contract, a griha pravesh, a first day at a new job. Work that has already begun simply continues, and daily routine, prayer and charity are not restricted. Yamaganda is avoided in the same way, mostly for travel and new ventures. Gulika is treated differently by different schools: many panchangs avoid it for beginnings, while some say that what is done in Gulika tends to repeat. When the hour must be chosen carefully, look at the whole day: Abhijit muhurta, the choghadiya and the hora on the city page.

Questions

What is the Rahu Kaal timing today?
It depends on the city: the table above gives today's Rahu kalam for ten cities in local time, from that city's sunrise and sunset. For any other city open the panchang hub and pick it from the list.
Is Rahu Kaal the same every day?
No. The part of the day is fixed by the weekday, but its clock time follows sunrise and sunset, so it shifts by a minute or two from day to day and by much more between summer and winter.
Is Rahu Kaal the same in every city?
No. Each city has its own sunrise and sunset, so on the same date Rahu kalam in Mumbai starts later than in Kolkata, and in London or New York it falls at a quite different local time.
Can I travel or sign papers in Rahu Kaal?
Tradition advises against starting a journey, a purchase or a contract in Rahu kalam. If it cannot be moved, finishing something already begun is not considered harmful.
What is the difference between Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika?
All three are eighths of the daylight, each fixed by the weekday. Rahu kalam is the one most panchangs stress; Yamaganda is avoided above all for travel; Gulika is read differently by different schools.
Is Rahu Kaal counted at night?
Most panchangs give Rahu kalam for the daylight only. Some also count a night period from sunset to sunrise; this site shows the daytime one, as almanacs in India usually do.
