The eclipses of 2027
In 2027 there are two solar eclipses — annular on 6 February and total on 2 August, the longest total eclipse over land between 1991 and 2114 — and three penumbral lunar eclipses: 20 February, 18 July and 17 August. In Jyotish eclipses are tied to Rahu and Ketu and are a time for inner work rather than beginnings.
In short
- 6 February 2027 — annular solar eclipse.
- 2 August 2027 — total solar, visible in Spain, North Africa and the Middle East.
- 20 February, 18 July, 17 August 2027 — penumbral lunar.
- Eclipses fall near the Rahu–Ketu axis (Capricorn–Cancer from 25.11.2026).
- Tradition advises against starting important things on an eclipse day.

According to the Dharmasindhu (Kashinatha Upadhyaya, 1790), sutak (vedha) means avoiding food from four yamas (about 12 hours) before a solar eclipse and three yamas (about 9 hours) before a lunar eclipse. Children and older people may eat until about one yama before the eclipse. It applies only where the eclipse is visible and lasts until it ends. Traditions differ in the details; follow the custom of your family or temple.
Why eclipses are tied to Rahu and Ketu
A solar eclipse happens at a new Moon and a lunar eclipse at a full Moon, but only when the Sun and Moon are near the lunar nodes. In the myth Rahu and Ketu “swallow” the lights. From 25 November 2026 the nodal axis runs through Capricorn and Cancer, so the 2027 eclipses fall in and around these signs.
Solar eclipses
6 February 2027 is annular: the Moon does not fully cover the Sun, leaving a “ring of fire”. 2 August 2027 is a total solar eclipse, one of the longest of the century: the path of totality crosses southern Spain, North Africa and the Middle East. In Jyotish solar eclipses touch the Sun's themes — authority, father, health, status — and the house of your chart in which they fall.
Lunar eclipses
20 February, 18 July and 17 August 2027 are penumbral lunar eclipses: the Moon only dims slightly. Many traditions consider penumbral eclipses weak and do not keep the strict rules (sutak) for them.
What to do on an eclipse day
Traditionally no important things are started, no deals concluded and no celebrations held on an eclipse day; the time is given to meditation, mantra and prayer, followed by a bath and charity. Tradition advises particular care for pregnant women. That is the ritual side; the main thing is to pause and not make irreversible decisions in a hurry.
