The Sun (Surya) in Vedic astrology
Surya is the king among the grahas: in Jyotish the Sun stands for the soul (atma), the father, authority and government, the heart and bones, and the ability to shine without asking for permission.

What the Sun signifies
The Sun is the natural karaka (significator) of the self and self-respect. Its placement shows where a person wants to be seen and recognised. It rules the father and figures of authority — bosses, the state, elders. In the body it rules the heart, the bones, the right eye in men and vitality as a whole.
By nature the Sun is hot, dry and mildly malefic: it burns what comes too close. A graha within a few degrees of the Sun becomes combust (asta) and loses part of its independence.
A strong and a weak Sun
Exalted in Aries (deepest at 10°), in its own sign Leo or in the 10th house, the Sun gives confidence, a talent for organising and a willingness to take responsibility. Debilitated in Libra (deepest at 10°), it makes a person dependent on the judgement of others: recognition is needed, but it comes through compromise and partnership.
A strong Sun is not always comfortable. In the 7th house it often brings a proud partner or a struggle over who leads; in the 8th, themes of inheritance and other people's resources; in the 12th, work away from the limelight. The meaning of the house always outweighs abstract strength.
The Sun's dasha
The Sun's mahadasha is the shortest in Vimshottari: 6 years. It brings career, status, the relationship with the father and with authority, sometimes a move or a change of role. A well-placed Sun puts you where you are seen; an afflicted one makes you defend your place and look after your health, the heart and blood pressure first of all.
Your “sun sign” in the sidereal zodiac
Western astrology calls the Sun's sign your zodiac sign. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the stars, and the Sun there currently stands about 24° earlier than in the tropical zodiac — so for most people the sun sign shifts back by one. More importantly, in Jyotish the Sun is not the centre of the chart: the lagna and the Moon are.
