Gaja Kesari yoga

Gaja Kesari — “elephant and lion” — is the yoga formed when Jupiter stands in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th sign) from the Moon. It promises intelligence, authority, respect and support. It occurs in roughly a third of all charts, so what matters is not the yoga itself but its strength.

What the yoga means

The elephant is strength and dignity, the lion courage and command. Jupiter is wisdom and blessing, the Moon the mind. When wisdom stands in a supporting position from the mind, a person thinks broadly, inspires trust and overcomes difficulties like an elephant that does not notice obstacles.

When the yoga is strong

The classics set conditions: Jupiter not debilitated (not in Capricorn) and not combust, the Moon not weak (not near the new Moon), both free of malefic affliction. It helps if Jupiter is also in a kendra from the lagna, in its own sign or exaltation (Sagittarius, Pisces, Cancer). Then the yoga genuinely sets a person apart.

When the yoga is weak

With Jupiter debilitated, in a dusthana from the lagna (6, 8, 12) or joined with Rahu or Saturn, the yoga exists formally but shows modestly: the person is intelligent and decent, without striking status. So the popular “you have Gaja Kesari, fame awaits” without an analysis of strength is an exaggeration.

When it shows

The yoga unfolds in the mahadasha and antardasha of Jupiter and the Moon, and when transiting Jupiter crosses the natal Moon or the kendras from it.

How rare is Gaja Kesari yoga?

Not rare: Jupiter falls in one of the four kendras from the Moon in about a third of charts.

Is it formed when Jupiter is in the same sign as the Moon?

Yes, the 1st sign from the Moon is also a kendra. It is the Jupiter–Moon conjunction.

Does it work with Jupiter in Capricorn?

Weakly: Jupiter is debilitated. If the debilitation is cancelled (neecha bhanga), results are better.
