What Jupiter signifies

Jupiter is the karaka of knowledge, mentors, children and blessing. Its placement shows where a person grows, whom they trust and where life is more generous. It rules religion and philosophy, law, finance and teaching, and in a woman's chart it traditionally signifies the husband. In the body: the liver, fat tissue and the thighs.

Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from itself. Its glance is considered healing: a house or planet under Jupiter's aspect is protected even in a difficult placement.

A strong and a weak Jupiter

Jupiter is exalted in Cancer (deepest at 5°), owns Sagittarius and Pisces, and is debilitated in Capricorn. Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon forms Gaja Kesari yoga: respect, intelligence and support. Jupiter in the 1st house has directional strength.

A weak Jupiter does not make a person unlucky. Rather, wisdom and trust have to be built without ready-made teachers, and financial decisions need checking.

Jupiter's transit

Jupiter takes about a year to cross a sign, and its transit through the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th signs from the Moon is considered favourable. On 31 October 2026 Jupiter enters Leo; on 24 January 2027 it slips back into Cancer and returns to Leo for good on 25 June 2027 (sidereal, JyotiSoft calculation).

The Jupiter dasha

The Jupiter mahadasha lasts 16 years: usually years of growth, study, children, marriage (especially for women) and travel in search of knowledge. Where Jupiter rules difficult houses (the 3rd and 6th for Libra, for example), its dasha grows both the useful and the troublesome — income and obligations alike.
