Raja yogas and dhana yogas

A yoga in Jyotish is a combination of planets that produces a particular result. Raja (“royal”) yogas link the lords of kendras (power) and trikonas (fortune) and promise success and status. Dhana yogas link the lords of the wealth houses (2, 5, 9, 11) and promise prosperity. Both deliver in the dashas of their planets.

What a raja yoga is

The kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are the houses of power and action, the trikonas (1, 5, 9) of fortune and merit. When their lords are conjunct, aspect each other or exchange signs, a raja yoga forms: the capacity to act meets good fortune. The link between the 9th and 10th lords — dharma-karma adhipati yoga — is especially prized. A planet that itself rules a kendra and a trikona is a yoga karaka.

What a dhana yoga is

The 2nd house is savings, the 11th income, the 5th and 9th fortune. Links between their lords, and with the lagna lord, form dhana yogas — combinations for wealth. The 2nd lord in the 11th and the 11th lord in the 2nd (an exchange of signs) is a classic strong dhana yoga.

Why a yoga may not work

A yoga describes potential. It is realised if the planets are strong (not debilitated, not combust, in good navamsha houses), not afflicted by malefics, and if the person lives through their dashas. A raja yoga whose dashas fall in the 90s of life will change little. That is why an experienced astrologer always looks at when a yoga activates.

Cancellation and dilution

If one of the yoga's planets also rules a dusthana (6, 8, 12), the yoga is mixed. If the planets are afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, results come with difficulty. The classics also describe the reverse case — viparita raja yoga, when dusthana lords occupy dusthanas and trouble cancels trouble.
