What the calendar includes

The profile gathers the Hindu year in one place. The engine picks the date of each festival and vrata by its classical rule: which tithi must hold at which time of day — sunrise, noon, after sunset or midnight; disputed cases follow the Dharmasindhu and the Nirnayasindhu. We check the dates against Drik Panchang for several cities and years. For each day you see what is celebrated, when the puja is and when to break the fast, timed by sunrise and sunset in your city. In the settings choose which vratas to show and when to be reminded; the profile can be connected together with ISKCON and others.

  • Ekadashi (Smarta) and parana
  • Pradosh: Shiva at dusk, twice a month
  • Sankashti Chaturthi: Ganesha, fast till moonrise
  • Masik Shivaratri: the monthly night of Shiva

How the fasts are kept

By the Smarta rule Ekadashi is kept on the day this tithi holds at sunrise. Vaishnavas are stricter: if the tenth day (Dashami) touches the time before dawn, they move the fast to the next day. So the Smarta and Vaishnava Ekadashi sometimes differ by a day; the calendar shows both if both profiles are connected. The fast is broken (parana) the next morning, in the first part of the day by your sunrise.

Pradosh is kept twice a month, on the Trayodashi of the waxing and of the waning moon. Its time is pradosha kala, about two hours after sunset, when, tradition says, Shiva is joyful and gracious. People fast during the day and worship Shiva at dusk. When Trayodashi falls in the dusk of two days, the day it holds longer is chosen. A Pradosh on Monday is called Soma Pradosh, on Tuesday Bhauma Pradosh, on Saturday Shani Pradosh; these are held to be especially auspicious.

Sankashti means deliverance from difficulties. The vrata is kept every month on the Chaturthi of the waning moon, and the moment that matters is moonrise: the day is chosen so that Chaturthi holds when the Moon rises. People fast all day, worship Ganesha in the evening, and after moonrise offer water to the Moon (arghya) and break the fast. A Sankashti on Tuesday is called Angaraki and is held to be especially strong. The moonrise time is for your city.

Every month, on the night before the new moon, a lesser Shivaratri is kept. The day is chosen by midnight: Chaturdashi must hold in nishita kala, around local midnight. People fast during the day, stay awake at night and worship Shiva. One of these nights in the year is Maha Shivaratri, the great night of Shiva; the calendar shows it on its own.

The fast is kept by one's strength. Strict forms are not advised for people with health conditions, pregnant women and children; decide with a doctor.

Questions

Why does the Smarta Ekadashi sometimes differ from the ISKCON one?
The Smarta rule looks at the tithi at sunrise; the Vaishnava rule of ISKCON also looks at the dawn before it and moves the fast when the tenth day touches it. On four to seven days a year the two fall a day apart. If you connect both profiles, the app shows both.
Why do the dates differ from city to city?
A tithi begins at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise, sunset and moonrise are local, and the rules ask which tithi holds at those moments. The table is for New Delhi; the app gives the dates and puja times for your city.
What is the puja time in the table?
The part of the day the festival's rule names: the pradosha after sunset for Pradosh and Diwali, midnight (nishita) for Shivaratri and Janmashtami, moonrise for Sankashti, midday for Rama Navami. It is given for New Delhi.
Is fasting safe for everyone?
The fast is kept by one's strength. Strict forms are not advised for people with health conditions, pregnant women and children; decide with a doctor.
