Hindu festival dates, 2026 and 2027

Every festival here is a rule, not a fixed date: a lunar day (tithi) in a lunar month that has to hold a certain part of the day, or the Sun entering a sign. So the date depends on where you are. The table below gives the dates in Delhi; each festival's page has the date and the time of the rule in 50 cities.

How the dates are calculated

The dates come from the same calendar engine as the JyotiSoft Mini App: the local sunrise, the tithis and the festival rules are calculated, not typed in. The rules are the Smarta ones of the Dharmasindhu and Nirnayasindhu as Drik Panchang publishes them: the tithi must hold the festival's part of the day (sunrise, midday, the evening after sunset or midnight), no festival is kept in an intercalary (Adhika) month, and the classical tie rules decide when the tithi touches that part of the day on two dates.

How the dates were checked

For every city and both years the dates were compared with Drik Panchang's published Hindu calendar for that city: 5609 of 5619 dates agree. A city is listed only after that comparison.

Other calendars

ISKCON keeps Janmashtami and some other days by the Vaishnava rule, and regional calendars (Tamil for Pongal, Malayalam for Onam, the Bihar tradition for Chhath) can name another day. If your family or temple follows a particular calendar, follow it. The Vaishnava fast days are on the Ekadashi pages.

Questions

Why does a festival fall on different dates in different cities?
Because the rule is read at the local sunrise and in local time: the same tithi can hold the evening in one city and not in another. The difference is usually one day.
Is the time on a festival page a muhurat?
No. It is the part of the day the rule looks at, for example the pradosh kala after sunset for Diwali. Particular pujas may use a narrower muhurat inside it.
Which festivals are listed?
54 pan-Hindu festivals by the Smarta rules, from Makar Sankranti and Maha Shivaratri to Diwali and Chhath. The Vaishnava fast days have their own Ekadashi pages.
