Houses (bhavas)
The 4th house in Vedic astrology
The 4th house rules the mother, home and land, vehicles, basic education and peace of mind. It is a kendra, and its natural karakas are the Moon (mother, heart) and Venus (vehicles, comfort).

What the 4th house rules
Sukha bhava, the house of happiness, shows what makes a person feel at home: the mother and the childhood home, property and land, cars, and the inner calm that lets one rest. It also rules school education and the heart as an emotional centre.
Planets in the 4th house
The Moon and Venus gain directional strength here. Benefics give a comfortable home and a good relationship with the mother. Malefics can bring moves, property disputes or restlessness; Mars here counts towards Mangal dosha. Ketu in the 4th may give detachment from home or a spiritual household.
When the house comes alive
The 4th house activates in the dasha of its lord, of the Moon or Venus, and of planets placed in it. Moves, buying property or a car, changes in the mother's life and renovations tend to fall in such periods. Saturn's transit over the 4th from the Moon (ardhashtama) can bring domestic strain and a need for rest.
4th lord and property
The 4th lord, its strength and the condition of Mars (land) and Venus (vehicles) show property and vehicles. A 4th lord in the 12th often points to living abroad or away from one's birthplace.
