Houses (bhavas)

The 7th house in Vedic astrology

The 7th house rules the spouse and marriage, business partners, contracts, trade and dealings with the public. It is a kendra and a maraka house; its natural karaka is Venus.

What the 7th house rules

Kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse, shows the partner and the marriage itself: when it comes, what the partner is like, how the relationship works. It also covers all one-to-one dealings — business partners, clients, open rivals — and travel abroad in some schools.

Planets in the 7th house

Saturn gains directional strength here. Benefics give a pleasant spouse and smooth partnerships. Malefics can delay marriage or bring friction; Mars in the 7th is a core position of Mangal dosha. Venus in the 7th is “karaka bhava nasha”: the partner is attractive but the relationship needs work.

When the house comes alive

Marriage is most often timed by the dasha of the 7th lord, Venus or a planet in the 7th, together with Jupiter's transit over the 7th house or its lord from the Moon or lagna. Business partnerships and important contracts follow the same periods.

7th lord and marriage

The 7th lord, Venus (and Jupiter in a woman's chart) and the navamsha (D9) together describe marriage. JyotiSoft's compatibility check compares both charts on the 36 gunas and on the 7th house of each.

Questions

Which house shows marriage?
The 7th, read with its lord, Venus (and Jupiter for women) and the navamsha (D9) chart.
Does Mars in the 7th mean a bad marriage?
No. It is a Mangal dosha position, which has many cancellations; it adds heat and energy to the relationship rather than doom.
Who is the karaka of the 7th house?
Venus.
