Houses (bhavas)

The 6th house in Vedic astrology

The 6th house rules illness and recovery, enemies and competition, debts and litigation, service, employees and daily work. It is both a dusthana and an upachaya; its karakas are Mars and Saturn.

What the 6th house rules

Ripu bhava, the house of enemies, shows obstacles that must be fought: disease, rivals, debt, lawsuits. It is also the house of daily work, service and routine — jobs, colleagues, pets and the habits that keep one healthy.

Planets in the 6th house

Malefics do well in the 6th: Mars, Saturn and Rahu here help defeat enemies and win competitions. Benefics in the 6th can soften conflicts but also weaken the planet's own significations. A strong 6th gives resilience and an aptitude for medicine, law, the army or service.

When the house comes alive

The 6th house activates in the dasha of its lord and of planets in it. Such periods can bring a new job, competition, legal matters or a health issue that asks for a change of routine. Malefics transiting the 6th from the Moon are favourable: they help defeat rivals and clear debts.

6th lord

The 6th lord placed in another dusthana (8th or 12th) can form viparita raja yoga — success that comes out of difficulty. In the 1st or 10th it may bring health or work struggles that demand attention.

Questions

Is the 6th house always bad?
No. It is difficult, but as an upachaya it improves with time and gives the strength to overcome illness and rivals.
Which house shows health problems?
Mainly the 6th (disease), with the 8th (chronic issues) and 12th (hospitalisation), always read against the lagna and its lord.
What is viparita raja yoga?
Lords of dusthanas (6, 8, 12) placed in each other's houses. Trouble cancels trouble and success comes through adversity.
