AI expert or live astrologer: an honest comparison
You can now get a chart reading from software without booking anything, or you can go to an astrologer for a consultation. This page is an honest comparison, with no sales pitch and no scare stories: what the AI in JyotiSoft does better than a person, where it is weaker, and when we ourselves suggest seeing a live astrologer. We are writing about our own product, so every plus below has been checked against how the product actually works, and the outside facts are listed with their sources at the end.
In short
- In JyotiSoft a calculation engine computes the chart, and a language model only writes the text from those facts. There is no human astrologer behind the AI.
- The AI's strengths: precise, repeatable calculation, the same conclusion to the same question, an answer at any hour, a price you know in advance, remedies by the tradition: a gemstone from the whole chart, mantra and charity first.
- Its weaknesses: no life experience or human presence, it can be confidently wrong or vague, and without an exact birth time neither software nor a person can know your ascendant and houses.
- The Barnum effect works on AI answers and on a live astrologer's words alike: a general text feels personal.
- A big decision, grief, an unknown birth time or learning the craft are reasons to see a live astrologer. A health, legal or money crisis is a reason to see a doctor, a lawyer or a counsellor.
What we mean by an AI expert
A general-purpose chatbot without an ephemeris attached does not calculate a chart; it picks plausible words. In October 2026 the makers of one astrology app tested the free model of a popular chatbot on 50 invented births. Without web search it put at least one planet in the wrong sign in 49 charts out of 50 and gave the wrong rising sign in 33 cases out of 40. That is a test by an interested company, not a scientific study. A practising astrologer's blog describes the same experience: clients bring chatbot "readings" in which only the Sun sign is right.
JyotiSoft splits the work. A calculation engine computes the planets, houses, nakshatras and dasha periods. The language model receives the finished facts and writes the text by the rules of one school: sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsha, whole-sign houses, the Parashari system. The details are in our method.
And the most important point: there is no live astrologer behind the AI "checking every answer". The software writes the answer. People read answers only when you contact support and during quality and safety checks.
Where the AI does better than a person
1. Fewer setup errors. Astrologers also calculate charts with software, but when they type data in by hand, they can pick the wrong time zone, forget daylight saving or choose a different ayanamsha. We take the time zone and daylight saving for the birth date from the international time-zone database (IANA). The dates quoted in our articles are recalculated by automated tests every time the site is built.
2. The same conclusion to the same question. A live conversation is a little different each time: the same astrologer may put the emphasis elsewhere from one consultation to the next, which is only human. Our conclusion depends only on the chart and the question: ask twice and the conclusion stays the same, though the wording may differ.
3. You can see what the conclusion rests on. The answer names the placements behind it: which house, which lord, which period. You can check them in your chart or show them to an astrologer. Advice without stated grounds cannot be checked.
4. Any hour, no booking. You can ask at 3 a.m. without arranging a meeting. Platforms with live astrologers are also open around the clock, but there you usually pay for every minute of the conversation.
5. A price you know in advance. Live consultations are paid per minute or per session, and even on one platform the rates of different astrologers differ by a factor of five or more. With us the price of an answer is shown before you pay, and you pay for the answer, not for minutes of conversation.
6. We do not sell fear. We do not sell rituals, pujas or "dosha removal". Gemstones we give as the tradition does: from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation. We earn nothing from "fixing your karma", so the model has nothing to push on you. Reviews of one large live-astrologer platform complain that people were pressed to book pujas. Police and courts in several countries have handled cases of people who called themselves astrologers or fortune-tellers, frightened clients with curses and then took money for rituals. This is not about most astrologers. But the risk is higher where the adviser earns from the cure.
7. Your chart is at hand. The bot remembers your chart and the charts of the people you created profiles for. You do not re-enter the data and retell the context each time.
8. Clear terms for your data. We do not sell personal data and do not use it for advertising. To be plain about where it goes: to write the text, your chart data and your question are sent to the language-model provider. You can delete your data at any time.
Where the AI is weaker: the minuses, plainly
No life experience or intuition. An experienced astrologer has heard many life stories and knows how similar placements play out in practice. The model knows only texts. It has never married, lost someone close or changed careers at forty.
No human presence in a crisis. If you are in a bad place, text on a screen does not replace the voice of a person who hears you. In November 2025 the American Psychological Association warned that chatbots and wellness apps should not replace care from a qualified mental-health professional, and that their ability to guide someone in crisis is "limited and unpredictable". The warning is about chatbots in general; we believe it applies to astrology bots too, ours included.
The model can be confidently wrong. Language models sometimes produce plausible but false statements. In September 2025 OpenAI explained why: the way models are trained and evaluated rewards a guess more than an honest "I don't know". In our case the planets' positions come from the engine's calculation, not from the model's memory, but an interpretation can still be wrong or stretched.
It can answer in generalities. Sometimes an answer is too general: "you have moments of doubt", "you value closeness". More on this below, under the Barnum effect.
It can tell you what you want to hear. In spring 2025 OpenAI rolled back an update that had made its model too agreeable: it went along with users, validated their doubts and fuelled their anger. If you phrase a question to get a particular answer ("it's time for me to leave, isn't it?"), a model may play along. Ask neutrally.
Without an exact birth time the AI hits the same limit. On average the ascendant moves a degree every four minutes and changes sign about every two hours, and the navamsha changes every 10–15 minutes; the exact speed depends on latitude and sign. Half an hour of error can change the rising sign, and with it the houses and everything that depends on them. This is a limit of astrology, not of the software: a live astrologer hits the same wall.
It cannot see you or ask a follow-up. A counsellor notices the word you paused on and asks, "What actually happened?" The model answers the question you typed. If the main thing stays unsaid, it will not be in the answer.
Traditions disagree, and the AI picks one. Schools of Jyotish differ on the ayanamsha, the house system, the nodes and the length of the dasha year. We chose one set of rules and name it openly, but an astrologer from another school may read your chart differently. See why programs show different charts.
Not for medical, legal or financial decisions. Neither an AI nor an astrologer makes diagnoses or replaces a doctor, a lawyer or a financial adviser.
The Barnum effect: a trap for AI and humans alike
In 1949 the psychologist Bertram Forer gave 39 students a "personal" profile, supposedly based on a test. In fact all of them got the same text, assembled from an astrology book bought at a newsstand. On average the students rated how well "their" profile fit at about 4.3 out of 5. The experiment has been repeated many times since. A general text feels written about us when it sounds personal, comes from an authority and is mostly flattering; statements with "at times" work best.
The effect works on a model's answer and on a live astrologer's words alike. The protection is the same for both: a reading that rests on the rules of the chart (the lord of a house, a dasha, a window in time) rather than on general phrases.
How to protect yourself. Look for specifics you can check: "because the lord of the 7th house is in the 12th", "a window from March to July". Skip any sentence that would fit anyone. Ask the same question about someone else's chart: if the answer barely changes, it says nothing about you.
The comparison in one table
| AI in JyotiSoft | Live astrologer | |
|---|---|---|
| Chart calculation | calculation engine, the same settings for everyone | the astrologer's software and settings |
| Repeatability | same question, same chart, same conclusion | the emphasis may shift between consultations |
| Grounds | the answer names the chart placements | depends on the astrologer |
| When you can ask | any hour, no booking | by appointment or during working hours |
| Price | shown before you pay | per minute or per session, rates differ fivefold or more |
| Gemstones and remedies | by the tradition, from the whole chart; mantra and charity first | by the astrologer's school and reading |
| Life experience, intuition | none | the main strength of an experienced astrologer |
| Presence in a crisis | none | a real person, but a crisis calls for a counsellor or a doctor |
| Follow-up questions | answers what you typed | sees you and asks back |
| Unknown birth time | experimental: suggests the likely rising sign | rectification from your life events |
| School | one, named openly | their own school and experience |
When to choose a live astrologer
- A big decision. Marriage, divorce, moving country, changing your life's work. The AI can help you prepare questions and see the periods, but talk the decision through with a person who will ask you questions back.
- Grief and loss. This calls for a person, and often a counsellor. A chart does not explain "why me", and should not try.
- An unknown birth time. Rectification from life events is long work with your own history. Our feature is still experimental: it suggests the likely rising sign. If you are not sure, see an astrologer. What you can learn without a time is covered in a birth chart without a birth time.
- Learning. A mentor explains why a rule works and shows the exceptions. The AI is a good reference and practice partner, but it does not replace a teacher.
- When you need a conversation, not a text. If being listened to matters, choose a person.
If you have a health problem, a legal problem or thoughts that life is not worth living, this is not a job for an astrologer or a bot. Contact a doctor, a lawyer, emergency services or a crisis line in your country.
How to check any reading
- Check the input: date, time, place, time zone.
- Find out which zodiac and ayanamsha were used.
- Find the grounds in the text: house, lord, period.
- Cross out the sentences that would fit anyone.
- Be wary if you are frightened and then offered a paid "fix" in the same breath: a stone, a ritual, a puja, a curse removal.
- Remember that dates are windows of likelihood, not a verdict.
Our position
AI is good for self-understanding and timing: seeing your tendencies and periods, preparing questions, returning to your chart any day. A live astrologer is better where experience, presence and conversation are needed. A chart is not a verdict: it describes tendencies and periods, and you make the decisions. We make no promises about events, sell no "remedies for fate" and never present software as a person.
