A chart without an exact birth time

Not everything needs the birth time. The signs of the planets, the Moon's nakshatra and even the dashas are often reliable with a time of “around noon”. The lagna, the houses and the divisional charts depend on minutes. Here is what you can read with confidence, what with caution, and how to judge your own case.

In short

  • Without a time the signs of all planets are reliable — except sometimes the Moon — and so are their mutual aspects.
  • The Moon covers about 13° a day: its nakshatra is reliable unless it changed on your birthday.
  • The lagna changes sign roughly every two hours; without a time the houses are unknown.
  • If the time is known to the hour, the lagna is often clear, but near the edge of a sign it needs checking.
  • The navamsha and other vargas are more sensitive than the lagna: D9 changes every 10–15 minutes.
  • When the time is unknown the chart is read from the Moon (Chandra lagna).

What changes in a day and what in minutes

The planets move slowly: the Sun about a degree a day, Saturn about two arc-minutes. So their signs and nakshatras on the day of birth do not depend on the hour — except on a day when a planet changes sign. The Moon is faster: 12–15° a day, about half a degree an hour. And the lagna travels the whole zodiac in a day — on average a degree every four minutes.

If there is no time at all

Then the chart is cast for noon and read from the Moon: the Moon's sign becomes a notional 1st house (Chandra lagna). This is what the tradition does anyway: transits, Sade Sati and 36-guna compatibility are all counted from the Moon. The dashas can be calculated too, with a caveat: if the Moon covered a large part of its nakshatra that day, dasha dates may shift by several months, and on the rare day the Moon changed nakshatra even the first dasha can change.

What cannot be said without a time: which sign was rising, which planets sit in which houses, what the navamsha and dashamsha show. Conclusions about career from the 10th house or marriage from the 7th should not be drawn without a time.

If the time is approximate

“In the morning”, “around three”, “between 2 and 3 pm” is already a lot. If the whole interval stays within one lagna sign, the lagna and houses are known and only the vargas are not. It is easy to check: cast the chart for the start and the end of the interval. Same lagna — the houses can be read; different lagnas — you have two (or more) candidate lagnas, and rectification helps to choose.

Signs rise at different speeds: in London, Aquarius and Pisces rise in under an hour each and Aries in about an hour, while each sign from Cancer to Libra takes nearly three hours; in Delhi the spread is narrower, from about 1.5 to 2.3 hours. So the same uncertainty changes nothing in one chart and the lagna in another.

A lagna at the edge of a sign

Even a hospital time is usually recorded to within 5–10 minutes. If the lagna is in the first or last two degrees of a sign, that uncertainty can move it into the neighbouring sign — and the whole house chart changes. A special case is gandanta, the junction of a water and a fire sign, which the tradition says must be checked with particular care.

How to tell if this is you: look at the lagna degree. Between 2° and 28°, five to ten minutes of error do not change it. Closer to the edge, compare charts for ±10 minutes and read with a caveat until the time is refined.

Where to find your birth time

The most reliable source is medical paperwork: the hospital discharge summary, maternity records, hospital archives. In some countries the time is printed on the birth certificate. Family memories help but are often rounded to the hour. If there is no time anywhere, do not “guess” it from a chart you like: it is better to read the chart honestly from the Moon.

What JyotiSoft does

If no time is given, JyotiSoft does not invent houses: answers rely on the Moon, the nakshatra and transits, and no conclusions are drawn from houses. If the time is approximate, the bot can refine the lagna for free: questions about character and appearance help choose between neighbouring signs. This narrows the choice but does not replace a document.

Questions

Can I find my nakshatra without a birth time?
Usually yes. The Moon crosses a nakshatra in about a day, so without a time the nakshatra is unknown only on the day the Moon changed it. Check it in the nakshatra calculator.
Can dashas be calculated without a time?
Yes, approximately: the balance of the first dasha depends on the Moon's degree, which without a time is known only to within 6–7°. Period dates may shift by months.
What is Chandra lagna?
A chart in which the Moon's sign is taken as the 1st house. It is always used as a second reference point, and as the main one when the time is unknown.
How exact does the birth time need to be?
For the lagna, 10–15 minutes is usually enough unless it is near the edge of a sign. The navamsha and smaller vargas need an accuracy of a few minutes.
Is a kundli without birth time accurate?
The planets, the Moon sign and usually the nakshatra are accurate; the lagna, houses and vargas are not. A kundli without a time should be read from the Moon, not from guessed houses.
