Rectification: how a birth time is refined

Rectification refines the birth time from the chart itself: from the dates of major events, from character and appearance, from classical checks. It is needed when the time is unknown, rounded, or the lagna sits on the edge of a sign. It is not guessing but testing candidates — and it has honest limits.

In short

  • The goal is to find the time at which the chart agrees with the known facts of a life.
  • First the search interval and the candidate lagnas are set, then they are tested against events.
  • Jyotish's main tools are the dashas, transits, the navamsha and the dashamsha.
  • You need 5–10 dated events: marriage, children's births, moves, job changes, losses.
  • The wider the interval and the fewer the events, the less reliable the result.
  • Rectification refines a time but does not prove it; a document is the best source.

When rectification is needed

Three typical cases. The time is unknown — then the lagna sign is searched for first. The time is rounded (“about eight”) — the search is within the hour. The time is exact but the lagna sits in the first or last degrees of a sign, and the question is which side of the line it falls on. If the interval stays within one lagna sign and you do not need the fine vargas, rectification is not necessary — see a chart without an exact birth time.

Step 1. Interval and candidates

First the limits are set honestly: “between 6 and 9 am”, “in the first half of the day”. Charts are cast across the interval every few minutes, noting where the lagna, the navamsha lagna and the dashamsha change. This gives a short list of candidates — usually two to six.

Step 2. Lagna traits

The classics describe every lagna sign through build, temperament and manner. Varahamihira in the Brihat Jataka and Parashara in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra give such descriptions for the signs and for planets in the 1st house. On its own the method is rough: people do not fit descriptions, and relatives describe us differently. But it rules out clearly unsuitable signs well — this is how “guess your lagna” questionnaires work.

Step 3. Events, dashas and transits

The main test in Jyotish is timing. For each candidate chart the astrologer checks which dashas and antardashas ran on the event dates and which houses they involve: marriage — the 7th house, its lord and Venus; a child's birth — the 5th house and Jupiter; a job change — the 10th house; a move — the 4th and 12th. Transits of Jupiter and Saturn over those houses are added. The time at which events keep matching “their” periods and houses becomes the leading candidate.

Because dashas are counted from the Moon's degree, not the lagna, they do not tell neighbouring minutes apart. What changes is the houses through which the periods are read — and that is enough to tell candidate lagnas apart.

Step 4. Fine-tuning with the vargas

Once the lagna is chosen, the minutes are refined with the divisional charts: the navamsha (D9) for marriage, the dashamsha (D10) for career, the saptamsha (D7) for children. Their lagna changes every 10–15 minutes, so their agreement with events narrows the window. This step needs exact dates and experience: with few events it is easy to fit any answer.

Classical methods

The classics also offer formal techniques. The Nashta Jataka (“lost horoscope”) chapter of Varahamihira's Brihat Jataka teaches how to reconstruct a chart when the birth data is lost — from the moment of the question, that is, with the methods of prashna. There are also checks based on special points of the chart, such as the pranapada described by Parashara. Schools argue about how reliable these rules are, so modern astrologers usually confirm the result with events.

What to prepare

For rectification by events you need: the date and place of birth, the time interval, and 5–10 events with exact dates (at least month and year) — marriage and divorce, the births of children, moves, admissions to study, job changes, serious illnesses and losses in the family. The more areas of life, the better. Ratings like “it was a good year” do not help — dates do.

The limits of the method

Rectification is a probabilistic conclusion. The wider the interval and the fewer the events, the more candidates explain them equally well, and the higher the risk of fitting. An honest result sounds like this: “Leo lagna is the most likely; the exact time is around 7:40, ±5 minutes.” If an astrologer names a time to the second from three events, be cautious.

Questions

Can I rectify my birth time online for free?
Questionnaires on character and appearance are free and help choose the lagna sign. Refining to the minute needs a reading of events through dashas and vargas: no automatic tool can do that without event dates.
How many events are needed?
At least five dated events from different areas of life; eight to ten is better. Three events can be explained by almost any time.
How accurate can rectification be?
With good data, to within a few minutes. With no events or a half-day interval, usually only to the lagna sign.
Should I rectify a time that is known to the minute?
It can be checked, but change it only if the lagna is at the edge of a sign and the events clearly point to the neighbouring sign. A document is more reliable than a chart.
How does Vedic rectification differ from Western?
Western rectification often uses directions and progressions; Jyotish uses dashas, transits and divisional charts. The principle is the same: make the time agree with the events.
