How to read a Vedic birth chart
A Vedic chart is read in order: first the lagna and its lord, then the Moon and its nakshatra, then the houses and their lords, the strength of the planets and finally the current dasha. This order keeps you from drowning in detail and shows the essentials first.
In short
- The chart is a square: north Indian style fixes the houses, south Indian style the signs.
- Step 1 — the lagna and its lord: body, character, life direction.
- Step 2 — the Moon, its sign and nakshatra: mind, emotions, dasha order.
- Step 3 — houses and their lords: which areas of life are linked.
- Step 4 — the current dasha and antardasha: what is active now.
North and south Indian styles
A Vedic chart is a square. In the north Indian style the top-centre diamond is always the 1st house and the houses run anticlockwise; the signs are written as numbers (1 = Aries, 2 = Taurus…). In the south Indian style the signs are fixed (Pisces top left, then clockwise) and the lagna is marked separately. The content is identical; only the drawing differs.
Step 1. The lagna and its lord
The lagna — the sign rising at birth — is the 1st house and the start of the house count. Note its sign, any planets in it and where its lord is. A strong lagna lord (own sign, exaltation, kendra or trikona) is one of the best features a chart can have; the house it occupies shows where life is directed.
Step 2. The Moon and its nakshatra
Next comes the Moon: its sign, house, phase and nakshatra. The Moon describes the mind and emotional climate, and its nakshatra sets the order of the Vimshottari dashas. It helps to read the chart from the Moon too (Chandra lagna) — it confirms or refines what the ascendant shows.
Step 3. Houses and their lords
For each area of life, look at three things: the house itself (planets in it and aspecting it), its lord (where it is and in what condition) and its karaka, the natural significator. For marriage, for example: the 7th house, its lord and Venus. Links between lords form yogas — raja yogas of success, dhana yogas of wealth and others.
Step 4. Planetary strength
Planets do not all act equally. A strong planet is in its own sign or exaltation, in a kendra, not combust, with good shadbala and a dignified navamsha. A weak one is debilitated, in a dusthana, combust or afflicted by malefics. Strength decides how clearly — and in which direction — a planet's themes show up.
Step 5. Dashas — when things happen
Finally, timing. The Vimshottari dasha tells you which planet rules the current period and sub-period; the themes of its houses are the agenda of those years. Transits of Saturn and Jupiter show when events ripen.
