The 1st house is the lagna, the sign rising in the east at birth. It describes the body, health, temperament and the general direction of life. It is the only house that is both a kendra and a trikona.

What the 1st house rules

The lagna is the self as it meets the world: appearance, constitution, vitality, character and the way a person approaches life. Its lord — the lagna lord — is the single most important planet in a chart; its strength and placement colour every other reading. The Sun is the natural karaka of the 1st house.

Planets in the 1st house

Planets in the lagna are expressed through the personality and are hard to miss. Jupiter and Mercury gain directional strength here. Benefics in the 1st give health and good fortune; malefics add drive, sharpness or health challenges, depending on their dignity. Mars in the 1st counts towards Mangal dosha.

When the house comes alive

The 1st house comes to the fore in the dasha of the lagna lord and of planets placed in the lagna, and when Saturn or Jupiter transit the ascendant sign. Such periods often bring a new start in how a person lives, looks after the body or presents themselves — a move, a change of image, a renewed focus on health.

Lagna lord placement

Where the lagna lord goes, the person goes: in the 10th it orients life towards career, in the 7th towards partnership, in the 12th towards foreign lands or retreat. A lagna lord in a dusthana is not a verdict, but asks for care in that area.

What is the lagna?
The sign (and degree) rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It becomes the 1st house, and all other houses are counted from it.
Why is the 1st house both a kendra and a trikona?
Because the kendras are houses 1, 4, 7, 10 and the trikonas 1, 5, 9. The lagna belongs to both groups, which is why its lord is always auspicious for the chart.
Can the lagna be wrong?
Yes, if the birth time is inaccurate. Near the border between two signs, a few minutes can change it; rectification helps.
