Moon sign vs Sun sign in Jyotish

In Vedic astrology the Moon sign matters more. The Moon is the mind and perception; transits and Sade Sati are read from its sign, dashas and compatibility from its nakshatra. The Sun sign describes the soul and status, but in day-to-day Jyotish forecasts it comes second.

In short

  • The Moon is the mind (manas), the Sun the soul (atma).
  • Indian daily horoscopes (rashiphal) are given by Moon sign.
  • Sade Sati is counted from the Moon sign.
  • The Moon's nakshatra sets the Vimshottari dashas and the 36-guna score.
  • Your Moon sign often differs from both your Western and your Sun sign.

Mind and soul

The classics call the Sun the atma, the soul, and the Moon the manas, the mind. The Sun shows the inner core, dignity and the relationship to authority. The Moon shows how a person feels, reacts, rests and attaches every day — and for everyday life, the mind matters more.

Why forecasts follow the Moon

Transits in Jyotish are read primarily from the Moon sign (gochara). Jupiter in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th sign from the Moon is favourable; Saturn over the Moon and the signs either side of it is Sade Sati. That is why Indian daily and yearly horoscopes (rashiphal) are written for the 12 Moon signs, not Sun signs.

The Moon's nakshatra

Even finer than the sign is the Moon nakshatra, one of 27. The Vimshottari dasha cycle starts from it, the 36-guna compatibility is scored from it, the first syllable of a traditional name and good days for action (tara bala) are chosen from it. When someone in India asks “what is your star?”, this is what they mean.

When the Sun sign matters

The Sun still matters: it is the karaka of the father, authority, heart health and reputation, and its house shows where a person wants to be seen. Solar events such as Makar Sankranti and Mesha Sankranti set the solar calendar. But Jyotish does not use the Sun sign as a person's main sign.

How to find your Moon sign

The Moon crosses a sign in about two and a quarter days, so the birth date usually gives the Moon sign; if the Moon changed sign that day, the time is needed too. For the nakshatra (about a day each) the time is advisable. The JyotiSoft Mini App shows your Moon sign, nakshatra and pada as soon as you enter your details.

Questions

Is my Vedic Moon sign the same as my Western one?
Not always. Because of the ayanamsha (about 24°), the Vedic Moon sign is often one earlier.
Why doesn't my rashiphal match my horoscope?
Indian rashiphal is written for the sidereal Moon sign, Western horoscopes for the tropical Sun sign. They are different signs.
Can I find my Moon sign without a birth time?
Usually yes, from the date. The exception is a day on which the Moon changed sign.
What is Chandra lagna?
A chart drawn with the Moon's sign as the 1st house. It is read alongside the ordinary lagna.
