The 12th house in Vedic astrology

What the 12th house rules

Vyaya bhava, the house of expenditure, shows where resources go: spending, donations, losses. It is also the house of distance — foreign countries, emigration, isolated places — and of what happens out of sight: sleep, dreams, private pleasures, hospitals, ashrams. As the last house it points to liberation, moksha.

Planets in the 12th house

Planets in the 12th work behind the scenes. Ketu here favours spiritual practice; Jupiter gives generosity and protection; Venus comfortable sleep and private pleasure; Rahu often brings life or work abroad. Malefics can bring expenses or a need for rest and retreat.

When the house comes alive

The 12th house activates in the dasha of its lord, of Ketu or of planets in it, and when Saturn transits the 12th from the Moon — the first phase of Sade Sati. Such periods can bring a move abroad, larger expenses, retreats, spiritual practice or a need for more sleep and rest.

12th lord

The 12th lord in a dusthana can form viparita raja yoga. In the 1st or 4th it often shows living away from the birthplace. Its link with the 9th favours long pilgrimages and study abroad.
