What Saturn signifies

Saturn is the karaka of longevity, work, duty and ordinary people. Its placement shows where life demands patience and where a person becomes a master over the years. Hard labour, land and mining, oil, old things, institutions and bureaucracy fall under Saturn. In the body: bones, joints, teeth and nerves.

Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th houses from itself. Spending about two and a half years in each sign, it tests every area of a chart slowly and thoroughly.

A strong and a weak Saturn

Saturn is exalted in Libra (deepest at 20°), owns Capricorn and Aquarius, and is debilitated in Aries. Saturn in the 7th house has directional strength. A strong Saturn gives endurance, honesty and the ability to build for the long term; for Taurus and Libra ascendants it is the yoga karaka and one of the best planets in the chart.

A weak Saturn means delays, fear of scarcity and a habit of carrying too much. The classical remedies are discipline, service, and help to elders and to those who have it harder.

Sade Sati

Sade Sati (“seven and a half”) is the roughly 7½ years in which Saturn transits the 12th sign from the Moon, the Moon's sign itself and the 2nd sign from it. It is a period of rebuilding: responsibilities grow, and what is no longer needed falls away. On 2 June 2027 Saturn enters Aries: for Moon-sign Aquarius Sade Sati ends, for Moon-sign Taurus it begins (sidereal, JyotiSoft calculation).

The Saturn dasha

The Saturn mahadasha lasts 19 years. These are years of working for a result: a career builds slowly but solidly. A well-placed Saturn brings position, property and respect in its dasha; an afflicted one brings heavy duties and health checks, especially of the joints and back.
