What the 2nd house rules

Dhana bhava, the house of wealth, shows what a person accumulates and keeps: savings, valuables, family resources. It also rules speech and the voice, the mouth and face, eating habits, and the values learned in the family. The 2nd lord's strength shows how money is earned and held.

Planets in the 2nd house

Benefics here give pleasant speech and family support; Jupiter is especially good for wealth. Malefics can make speech harsh or bring family strain. Mars in the 2nd counts towards Mangal dosha in some schools. Rahu here can give unusual diet or speech, or wealth from foreign sources.

When the house comes alive

The 2nd house activates in the dasha of its lord or of planets in it, and when Jupiter transits the 2nd from the Moon — a classic window for savings and family events. Saturn's passage through the 2nd from the Moon is the last phase of Sade Sati, when finances and speech need care.

The 2nd as a maraka

The 2nd and 7th houses are the classical maraka (death-inflicting) houses, because they are the 12th from the 3rd and 8th, the houses of longevity. In practice this matters in longevity calculations and in timing difficult periods; it is not a reason for fear.
