What Mars signifies

Mars is the karaka of will, action and competition. Its placement shows where a person takes the initiative and where they are ready to fight. It rules younger siblings, land and property (together with the 4th house), machines and engineering, surgery, the police and the army. In the body: blood, muscle and marrow.

Mars has special aspects on the 4th and 8th houses from itself, in addition to the 7th that every graha casts — so it touches more of a chart than it first seems.

A strong and a weak Mars

Mars is exalted in Capricorn (deepest at 28°), owns Aries and Scorpio, and is debilitated in Cancer. A strong Mars gives decisiveness, stamina and the ability to win arguments. A weak one turns anger inward: long patience, then an explosion, or energy wasted on small fights.

Mars in the 10th house gains directional strength (dig bala) — the classic placement for soldiers, surgeons, athletes and entrepreneurs.

Mangal dosha

When Mars stands in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant (and, in several schools, from the Moon and Venus), the chart has mangal (manglik) dosha. It is weighed in matchmaking because Mars in the houses of marriage and family adds heat to a relationship. It has many classical cancellations — Mars in its own sign or exaltation, Jupiter's aspect, the same dosha in the partner's chart. The Mars mahadasha lasts 7 years: action, competition, buying land or a car, sport, sometimes surgery or conflict. If Mars is strong and rules good houses, these are years of breakthroughs and of decisions long postponed.
