Schools of Jyotisha

Jaimini: the school of signs and karakas

The school of the sage Jaimini, set down in the terse Jaimini Sutras. It looks at signs rather than houses, at the karaka planets of the soul, and at sign-based dashas such as chara dasha.

What it is

The Jaimini Sutras (Upadesha Sutras) are written extremely concisely, and their meaning is passed on through commentaries. At the heart of the school are the chara karakas: planets that, by their degree in a sign, become the significator of the soul (atmakaraka), of the mind, of the spouse and so on. Aspects in Jaimini are between signs, and timing comes from sign-based dashas, chara dasha among them. Special attention goes to the arudha lagna, how the world sees a person. The school complements Parashari well when the same chart needs another angle.

Main techniques

The seven or eight chara karakas, ranked by degree; the atmakaraka and its Navamsha sign (the karakamsha); sign aspects (rashi drishti); arudha padas, above all the arudha lagna and the upapada; argala, the intervention of signs; chara dasha and other sign dashas.

Classic texts

Jaimini Sutras (Upadesha Sutras) with their commentaries; Jaimini Sutramritam; Kalpalata.

Questions

How is Jaimini different from Parashari?
Jaimini judges by signs and by the karakas chosen by degree, and times events by sign-based dashas; Parashari judges by houses and planets and times events by planetary dashas.
What is the atmakaraka?
The planet with the highest degree in its sign. Jaimini reads it as the significator of the soul, the theme that runs through the whole life.
Can Jaimini and Parashari be used together?
Yes, and that is how many astrologers work: a promise seen by both schools is considered more certain.
