Schools of Jyotisha

Parashari: the school of houses, planets and dashas

The most widely followed school of Jyotisha, named after the sage Parashara. It rests on the twelve houses, the planets with their strength and dignity, and the vimshottari dasha system of periods.

What it is

Parashari goes back to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, a treatise tradition ascribes to the sage Parashara, the father of Vyasa. The school reads the chart through the houses and their lords, planetary strength (shadbala), aspects, yogas and the vargas, the divisional charts. It times events through the dashas, above all vimshottari, the 120-year cycle counted from the Moon's nakshatra, and through transits. Most astrologers in India today and almost every Jyotisha program rely on Parashari; JyotiSoft's main calculations are built on it too.

Main techniques

The twelve houses and their lords; the dignity and strength of planets (exaltation, own sign, shadbala); full aspects of every planet to the seventh house and the special aspects of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn; yogas such as Raja and Dhana yogas; the divisional charts, above all the Navamsha; vimshottari dasha with its sub-periods; Ashtakavarga for transits.

Classic texts

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra; Phaladipika of Mantreshvara; Saravali of Kalyana Varma; Hora Sara.

Questions

Is Parashari the same as Vedic astrology?
It is its most common form. When people say “Vedic astrology” without naming a school, they almost always mean Parashari.
What is vimshottari dasha?
A 120-year cycle of planetary periods counted from the nakshatra of the Moon at birth. It shows which planet's themes lead each stretch of life.
Where is Parashari used in JyotiSoft?
In the chart, the dashas, the daily forecast and the Panchanga, and as one of the four voices of the Council of schools.
