Atmakaraka and the chara karakas
The atmakaraka is the “significator of the soul”: the planet that has travelled furthest through its sign. The concept comes from the Jaimini system and is also used by Parashara. From the atmakaraka and the charts linked to it astrologers judge a person's main inner lesson. Below: how to find it, how the chara karakas work and how to read the atmakaraka without exaggeration.
In short
- The atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree within its sign (the sign itself does not matter, only degrees and minutes).
- Chara karakas are “movable”: different planets take the roles in different charts.
- The order: atmakaraka, amatyakaraka, bhratrikaraka, matrikaraka, (pitrikaraka), putrakaraka, gnatikaraka, darakaraka.
- There are two schemes: seven karakas (the Sun to Saturn) and eight, with Rahu, whose degree is counted from the end of the sign.
- The karakamsha is the atmakaraka's sign in the navamsha; it is used to judge inclinations and the spiritual path.
- The atmakaraka describes a lesson, not a fate: a “difficult” planet is a direction of growth.
Fixed and movable karakas
In Jyotish every theme has a fixed significator: the Sun is the father, the Moon the mother, Venus the spouse and so on. The Jaimini system adds the chara karakas, movable significators: the roles are assigned afresh in every chart by the planets' degrees. Parashara describes them in the chapter on karakas of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, and they are developed most fully in the Jaimini Sutras.
How to find the atmakaraka
Write down the degree of every planet within its sign, ignoring the sign itself: the Sun 27°12′ Taurus, the Moon 14°05′ Virgo and so on. The planet with the highest degree is the atmakaraka. The next is the amatyakaraka, and so on in descending order; the planet with the lowest degree is the darakaraka.
In the eight-karaka scheme Rahu takes part too: because it moves backwards, its degree is counted from the end of the sign (30° minus its degree). Both the seven- and eight-karaka schemes go back to Parashara, and schools choose differently.
The eight chara karakas
| Karaka | Rank by degree | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Atmakaraka (AK) | 1st, highest | the soul, the main lesson, the “king” of the chart |
| Amatyakaraka (AmK) | 2nd | the adviser, profession, path of achievement |
| Bhratrikaraka (BK) | 3rd | siblings, the teacher |
| Matrikaraka (MK) | 4th | mother, home |
| Pitrikaraka (PiK) | 5th (eight-karaka scheme) | father |
| Putrakaraka (PK) | next | children, students, creativity |
| Gnatikaraka (GK) | next | rivals, obstacles, relatives |
| Darakaraka (DK) | last, lowest | spouse, partner |
The karakamsha
The karakamsha is the sign the atmakaraka occupies in the navamsha. In the Jaimini tradition it is used to judge inclinations, profession and the spiritual path: planets in the karakamsha and in the 12th from it describe what the soul is drawn to. The karakamsha can also be used in the birth chart: the same sign taken as the lagna.
The atmakaraka by planet
Brief pointers — not verdicts, but themes tradition links with each planet as atmakaraka:
- Sun — the lesson of pride and real authority: to lead without suppressing.
- Moon — the lesson of care and emotional maturity: support for others and for oneself.
- Mars — the lesson of strength and anger: courage without aggression.
- Mercury — the lesson of word and intellect: honesty in speech and in reckoning.
- Jupiter — the lesson of knowledge and guidance: to teach without preaching.
- Venus — the lesson of desire and relationships: love without dependence.
- Saturn — the lesson of time and responsibility: patience, service, accepting limits.
- Rahu (eight-karaka scheme) — the lesson of wanting more: telling your own wishes from borrowed ones.
How not to overrate the atmakaraka
The atmakaraka matters, but it is one of many points in a chart. Its strength is judged by sign, house and navamsha, and conclusions are checked against the lagna, the Moon and the dashas. There is also a technical point: if two planets are at almost the same degree, the atmakaraka depends on the exact birth time and on the scheme (seven or eight karakas). In that case do not build far-reaching conclusions on it.
