The lagna (ascendant) in Vedic astrology

The lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. In Jyotish it is the 1st house and the key point of the chart: it describes the body, character and direction of life, and all twelve houses are counted from it.

How the lagna is found

Earth turns once a day, and in that time all 12 signs rise one after another on the eastern horizon — on average about two hours each, faster or slower depending on latitude. The sign and degree rising at the moment of birth is the lagna. That is why it needs the exact time and the coordinates of the birthplace.

What the lagna shows

The lagna is the 1st house: appearance, constitution, vitality, temperament and the way a person approaches life. The sign sets the tone: fire lagnas are active, earth lagnas practical, air lagnas sociable, water lagnas sensitive. Its lord shows where energy goes, and planets in the lagna colour the character strongly.

The lagna lord

The ruler of the lagna sign — the lagnesha — is the most important planet in a chart. Its strength (sign, house, nakshatra, navamsha) speaks of health and vitality, and its house of the main direction of life: in the 10th, career; in the 7th, partnership; in the 9th, learning and faith; in the 12th, foreign lands or retreat.

Yoga karakas by lagna

The lagna also decides the functional nature of the planets: the same planet is a friend for one ascendant and a troublemaker for another. Most valuable is the yoga karaka, a planet ruling both a kendra and a trikona: Saturn for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius.

If the birth time is unknown

Without a time the lagna is undetermined: it passes through every sign in a day. The chart is then read from the Moon, which moves only 12–15° a day. If even an approximate time is known, the lagna can be refined by rectification from the dates of important life events.

Questions

Are the lagna and the ascendant the same?

Yes. Lagna is the Sanskrit name for the ascendant, the sign (and degree) rising at birth.

Why is my lagna different from my Western ascendant?

Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, so the ascendant degree shifts by about 24° and often lands in the previous sign.

How accurate must the time be?

The closer the lagna is to a sign boundary, the more it matters — sometimes a few minutes. In the middle of a sign, an error of 15–20 minutes is usually not critical.

Which matters more, lagna or Moon?

Both. The lagna describes body and life direction, the Moon mind and perception; a good reading uses both.
