Navamsha (D9): the second main chart
The navamsha is the chart in which each sign is divided into nine parts of 3°20′. It is called “the fruit of the tree”: if the main chart is the tree, the navamsha shows what will grow from it. It is read for marriage, the inner strength of planets and the second half of life.
In short
- Each navamsha equals one nakshatra pada (3°20′).
- A planet in the same sign in D1 and D9 is vargottama — strong.
- With the 7th house of D1, the navamsha is the main chart for marriage.
- A planet debilitated in D1 but strong in D9 often performs well.
- The D9 ascendant needs a birth time accurate to a few minutes.
How the navamsha is built
A 30° sign is divided into 9 parts of 3°20′ — exactly the length of a nakshatra pada. The count starts from Aries for fire signs, Capricorn for earth signs, Libra for air signs and Cancer for water signs. The result is that the 108 padas of the zodiac coincide with 108 navamshas — the twelve signs nine times over.
Vargottama
If a planet (or the lagna) stands in the same sign in the main chart and in the navamsha, it is vargottama — “best among the divisions”. Such a planet is stable and delivers its results clearly. Vargottama falls in the first navamsha of movable signs, the fifth of fixed signs and the ninth of dual signs.
The navamsha and marriage
The 7th house of the navamsha, its lord and the placement of Venus and Jupiter in D9 describe the spouse and the character of the marriage. The classics say the promise of marriage in D1 is fulfilled if D9 supports it, which is why compatibility readings look at both partners' navamshas.
The navamsha and planetary strength
The navamsha tests a planet's “true” strength. A planet exalted in D1 but debilitated in D9 may disappoint; one debilitated in D1 but strong in D9 often does better than expected (this is one of the conditions of neecha bhanga). Shadbala and vimshopaka also count the navamsha placement.
Birth-time accuracy
The navamsha ascendant changes every 3°20′ of the lagna — about every 13 minutes. So the D9 lagna is sensitive to errors in the birth time; planetary positions in D9 are more stable (except the Moon, which changes navamsha about every six hours).
