When marriage comes: what Jyotish looks at
“When will I get married?” — in India often “shadi kab hogi?” — is one of the questions astrologers hear most. Jyotish answers it not with a single date but with periods when partnership becomes the main theme of the chart. Below: which factors are used, how they are combined and where the honest limit of a forecast lies.
In short
- The basis is the 7th house, its lord and Venus; in a woman's chart tradition also looks at Jupiter.
- The navamsha (D9) is the main divisional chart for marriage.
- Dashas set the timing: periods of the 7th lord, Venus, planets in the 7th and those linked to it.
- Transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the 7th house and its lord “switch on” those periods.
- A chart shows windows of likelihood, not a date and not a guarantee.
- A delay in the chart means “later”, not “never”.
The indicators of marriage
The 7th house is the house of the partner and the union. Astrologers look at the sign of the 7th, the planets in it and, above all, its lord: where it stands, how strong it is, what it is linked with. Venus is the karaka of marriage and love for everyone; in a woman's chart classical tradition also looks at Jupiter. The 2nd house (family) and the 11th (fulfilment of wishes) matter as well.
The Jaimini system adds the darakaraka — the planet with the lowest degree in its sign — and the upapada, the “image” of the 12th house. On the chara karakas see atmakaraka.
The navamsha
The navamsha (D9) is the divisional chart tradition uses to read marriage and the “fruit” of the chart. Astrologers look at the navamsha lagna, its 7th house and the position of Venus. If the 7th house and Venus are strong in both the birth chart and the navamsha, marriage is a pronounced theme in life. The navamsha is sensitive to birth time: it changes every 10–15 minutes.
Timing: the dashas
The main tool for “when” is the dashas. Marriage most often comes in the mahadasha or antardasha of one of these planets: the 7th lord; Venus (and Jupiter in a woman's chart); planets placed in or aspecting the 7th; the lord of the 7th in the navamsha. Rahu also often brings a union, especially an unexpected one. The more of these conditions meet in one period, the more likely it is.
Timing: the transits
A dasha sets the years; transits refine the months. Traditionally Jupiter is watched: its transit through the 7th house, through the sign of the 7th lord, or its aspect on them. The modern “double transit” technique popularised by K. N. Rao requires Jupiter and Saturn to touch the 7th house or its lord at the same time. It is a technique of later practice rather than a rule of the classical texts, but many astrologers use it.
“Late marriage” and “delays”
Saturn linked to the 7th house or Venus is traditionally read as marriage later than average but lasting; Mars in the 7th as a union of strong temperament (see Mangal dosha); Rahu as an unconventional choice. No placement means “there will be no marriage”. The chart describes the character and timing of the theme; the person makes the decisions. Life circumstances — moving, study, work — also shift the timing, and an honest astrologer takes them into account.
What astrology does not promise
Astrology does not give a name or an exact date and does not guarantee a meeting. It shows the periods when partnership comes to the fore in your life and the qualities that matter in a union. If someone promises “a wedding this year” after a ritual, that is a sale, not Jyotish.
How to ask JyotiSoft
The JyotiSoft bot has the topics “When I'll meet love” and “Get married”: the answer is built from the 7th house, Venus, the navamsha, your dashas and transits, with an explanation of what the conclusion rests on. For a specific decision, prashna — an answer based on the moment of the question — fits better. Compatibility with a particular person is checked by the 36-guna calculator.
