Why is my sign different in Vedic astrology?

Because Jyotish counts the signs from the stars, while Western astrology counts them from the spring equinox. Over the last ~1,700 years these two starting points have drifted about 24° apart, so for most people the Sun, Moon or ascendant falls one sign earlier in a Vedic chart.

In short

  • The tropical zodiac is tied to the equinox, the sidereal zodiac to the stars.
  • The gap between them is the ayanamsha, now about 24°.
  • It grows by about 1° every 72 years because of the precession of Earth's axis.
  • JyotiSoft uses the Lahiri ayanamsha, India's official standard.
  • A planet in the first ~24° of a Western sign usually sits in the previous sign in Jyotish.

Two zodiacs

Both zodiacs divide the ecliptic — the Sun's apparent path — into 12 signs of 30°. They differ in where they start. The tropical zodiac of Western astrology begins Aries at the spring equinox: the Sun enters “Aries” every year around 20–21 March. The sidereal zodiac of Jyotish begins Aries at the fixed stars: there the Sun enters Aries around 14 April.

About 1,700 years ago, in the 3rd–4th century CE, the two starting points nearly coincided. Since then the equinox has moved.

Precession and the ayanamsha

Earth's axis slowly traces a cone, like a spinning top — this is precession. A full circle takes about 25,800 years, and the equinox point slides against the stars by roughly one degree every 72 years. The angle between the start of the tropical and the sidereal zodiac is the ayanamsha, about 24° today.

There are several ways to fix its exact value. The most widely used is the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha, recommended by India's Calendar Reform Committee in 1955, which places the star Spica (the nakshatra Chitra) exactly at 0° Libra. JyotiSoft uses it too; in 2026 it is about 24°13′.

Which sign is yours

If a planet sits in the first 24° or so of a Western sign, it falls in the previous sign in a Vedic chart; if it is further in, it stays in the same sign. A Western Sun at 10° Taurus, for example, is Vedic Aries at 16°, while a Western Sun at 28° Taurus is still Taurus (4°) in Jyotish. A calculated chart gives the exact answer.

Sun sign or Moon sign

In Jyotish the Sun sign is not the main sign at all. A Vedic astrologer first asks for your lagna and Moon sign, and more precisely your Moon nakshatra. So the “sign change” is less dramatic than it seems: you gain a new, finer layer rather than lose the old one.

Which zodiac is right

Both zodiacs are internally consistent, but they measure different things. The tropical zodiac is seasonal, tied to Earth's year around the Sun. The sidereal zodiac is stellar, tied to the real constellations and the nakshatras on which the dashas are built. Vedic methods — nakshatras, dashas, Ashtakuta, muhurat — are built for the sidereal zodiac, so it is best not to mix the two systems in one chart.

Questions

Why exactly 24 degrees?
That is the ayanamsha — the drift of the equinox point since the start of the common era due to precession. By Lahiri it is about 24°13′ in 2026.
Does everyone's sign change?
No. For roughly four people in five: the sign shifts back when the Sun stands in the first ~24° of the Western sign, which is 24 of its 30 degrees. For the rest the sign is the same.
Which ayanamsha does JyotiSoft use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the standard of the Indian national calendar and most Vedic software.
Can I use both zodiacs?
Yes, but not mixed. Vedic techniques — nakshatras, dashas, compatibility — only work in the sidereal zodiac.
