What is Jyotish?

Jyotish is the traditional astrology of India — the “science of light”. It calculates the chart in the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the stars, divides the sky into 27 nakshatras and describes life in periods called dashas. Its centre is not your Sun sign but your lagna (ascendant) and Moon.

In short

  • Sidereal zodiac: signs are counted from the stars, currently about 24° earlier than Western signs.
  • Nine grahas: the Sun, the Moon, five visible planets and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu.
  • 27 nakshatras — lunar mansions that set the dashas and compatibility.
  • Dashas show when each planet “switches on” in a life.
  • Exact calculation, interpretation by classical rules rather than intuition.

Where Jyotish comes from

The word jyotish means “light” or “the science of the heavenly lights”. It is one of the six Vedangas, the auxiliary disciplines of the Vedas, and began as a way to time rituals. Horoscopic astrology grew out of it; its central classical text is the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), alongside Saravali, Phaladeepika, Jataka Parijata and the separate school of Jaimini.

Jyotish is a living tradition: in India families consult it before a wedding, buying a home, naming a child or starting a business. Outside India it is valued for the predictive precision of the dashas and the depth of its analysis.

How it differs from Western astrology

The zodiac. Western astrology starts the signs at the spring equinox (tropical zodiac); Jyotish starts them at the stars (sidereal). The difference, the ayanamsha, is now about 24°, so most people's signs move back by one in a Vedic chart. See why my sign is different.

The centre of the chart. In the West the Sun dominates. In Jyotish the lagna and the Moon come first; the Moon sets your nakshatra, dashas and transits.

The planets. Jyotish works with 9 grahas — the lights visible to the eye and the two lunar nodes. Planets discovered with a telescope are not part of the classical system.

Timing. The main forecasting tool is the dasha system, periods ruled by planets; Western astrology relies more on transits and progressions.

What a Vedic chart contains

The chart (janma kundali) shows where the nine grahas stood at birth — in which signs, houses and nakshatras. It is drawn as a square, in the north or south Indian style. Besides the main chart (rashi, D1) astrologers draw vargas, divisional charts: the navamsha D9 for marriage and inner strength, the dashamsha D10 for career, and others.

The twelve houses are the areas of life — self, money, siblings, home, children, health, partner, longevity, fortune, career, gains and loss. The nine grahas are the forces acting in them.

What your chart can tell you

A Vedic reading describes temperament and strengths, tendencies in work, relationships and money — and above all timing: which years favour action, when it is wiser to build strength, when change arrives. Specific methods answer specific questions: couple compatibility by the 36 gunas, choosing an auspicious date (muhurat), prashna — answering a question from the chart of the moment.

It also has limits: Jyotish describes tendencies and periods, not verdicts, and it does not replace medical, legal or financial advice.

Why the birth time matters

The slow planets barely move in a day, but the lagna changes every two hours and the Moon crosses a nakshatra in about a day. A full reading therefore needs the date, time and place of birth. Without a time, the Moon chart (Chandra lagna) is used and the time can be estimated from life events — rectification.

How JyotiSoft calculates

Every astronomical value in JyotiSoft is a precise calculation of the sky at the moment of birth: sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsha, the true lunar node, Vimshottari dashas, vargas, shadbala and Ashtakuta. The explanations are written from those computed facts, so the same question about the same chart always rests on the same data.

Questions

Are Jyotish and Vedic astrology the same thing?
Yes. Jyotish is the Sanskrit name; “Vedic astrology” is the usual English term. It is also called Indian astrology.
Do I need to be Hindu to use Jyotish?
No. The calculations and rules of interpretation work regardless of belief; the ritual remedies (upayas) are optional.
Why does Jyotish focus on the Moon rather than the Sun?
The Moon is the mind and perception; it moves fast and makes charts individual. Your dashas start from its nakshatra and transits are read from its sign.
Where should I start?
With your own chart: lagna, Moon and its nakshatra, and your current dasha. The reference pages on nakshatras, planets, signs and houses on this site are a good place to begin.
