Aries (Mesha) in Vedic astrology

The nature of Aries

As the first sign, Aries is the impulse that starts the wheel: fire that wants to move, and a movable sign that prefers to begin rather than maintain. Mars gives it courage, competitiveness and a short fuse. The Sun reaches its highest dignity here (deepest exaltation at 10°), which makes Aries a sign of self-assertion and leadership; Saturn, the planet of patience, is at its weakest (deepest debilitation at 20°).

Aries ascendant and Aries Moon

An Aries ascendant usually gives an energetic, straightforward person who acts first and reflects later, with Mars — the lagna lord — as the key planet of the chart. For this ascendant the Sun (5th lord) and Jupiter (9th and 12th lord) are friends, while Mercury, ruling the 3rd and 6th, is more difficult. An Aries Moon feels quickly and recovers quickly; it needs movement and gets restless with routine.

Aries in a chart

The house that holds Aries in your chart is where you are willing to take the initiative and to fight. Planets in Aries act boldly: Mars here is in its own sign, the Sun exalted, while Saturn and Venus have to work harder to express themselves patiently or gently.

Aries is the first sign of the natural zodiac and echoes the 1st house: body, energy, beginnings.

Nakshatras in Aries

Aries holds Ashwini (speed and healing), Bharani (responsibility and passion) and the first pada of Krittika (purifying fire). It begins right after the Pisces–Aries gandanta, the point where the zodiac starts over.
