What the period is about

Saturn signifies time, discipline, service, old age, land, labour and endurance. Its period often brings heavier responsibility, a more serious career, care for elders and a slow, real consolidation of what a person has. It is not the same as Sade Sati, which is a transit; the two can overlap but are read separately.

What decides the results

Saturn is strong in Capricorn and Aquarius and exalted in Libra; in Aries it is debilitated. For Taurus and Libra ascendants it is the yogakaraka, and its dasha can lift a whole life. For Cancer, Leo and Pisces lagnas it rules difficult houses, and the period asks for effort before reward. The house Saturn occupies shows where the nineteen years build.

The antardashas

Saturn/Saturn opens with three years, the most intense stretch of the period. Saturn/Mercury and Saturn/Venus are traditionally among the better sub-periods, because Mercury and Venus are Saturn's friends. Saturn/Sun and Saturn/Moon bring Saturn's natural rivals into play and are watched for tension with authority or emotional heaviness. Saturn/Mars combines restraint with impatience, a time to channel effort into work.

Saturn rewards regularity: honest work, routine, patience, care for the body and for those who have less. Practical debts and promises are best kept small and kept. Traditional remedies include Saturday fasting, service and the worship of Hanuman or Shani; the tradition gives a blue sapphire when Saturn is a functional benefic of the chart, and treats it with particular caution.
