Budha-Aditya yoga (Sun and Mercury)

Budha-Aditya, also called Nipuna yoga, joins the Sun and Mercury and is said to give intelligence and skill. It is also the most common yoga our engine reports: Mercury never strays far from the Sun, so the two share a sign in about half of all charts.

How often it forms

Budha-Aditya yoga	50.8% of charts

Share of 3,000 charts computed by the JyotiSoft engine for random births (1950–2010, any hour, places from 40° S to 60° N). A common yoga is not a lesser one, but its presence alone says little; what matters is its strength in the whole chart.

Why it is so common

Mercury is never more than about 28° from the Sun, so the two often occupy one sign. That is why half of all people have Budha-Aditya by the rule. Its presence alone tells little; the conditions around it tell a lot.

What makes it real

The yoga gives most when Mercury is not too close to the Sun (outside its combustion orb), when the sign is good for both (Gemini, Virgo, Leo or Aries for the Sun), and when it falls in a strong house such as the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th or 10th. Then it can show as a quick, organised mind, a talent for exams, administration, writing or speaking in public, and recognition for intelligence.

When it is weak

A combust Mercury in a dusthana gives the same combination with little of its promise: cleverness spent on worry, or intelligence that serves others' authority. That is not a misfortune, just an ordinary chart. It is better to know that than to build hopes on a yoga half the world shares.

Is Budha-Aditya yoga rare?

No. In our engine's sample it forms in about half of all charts, because Mercury always stays near the Sun.

Does combustion cancel Budha-Aditya yoga?

Not by the rule our engine follows, but classical commentators agree that a deeply combust Mercury gives its results weakly.
