Lagna near a sign border
The lagna moves through the zodiac by about one degree every four minutes, so a birth time that is off by a few minutes can put the ascendant into the neighbouring sign. In our count, a ten-minute doubt changes the lagna sign for roughly one birth in six. This article shows how to see whether your chart is affected and what to rely on until the time is confirmed.
In short
- The lagna advances about 1° every 4 minutes — from under 2 to about 6 minutes per degree, depending on the sign and how far north the place is.
- About 6–7% of births fall within 1° of a sign border; a doubt of ±4 minutes changes the lagna sign in about the same share of charts.
- A doubt of ±10 minutes changes it in 15–18% of charts, ±15 minutes in about a quarter.
- The Moon sign, the nakshatra and the order of the dashas hardly depend on the minutes; the houses, the lagna lord and the divisional charts do.
- To check: cast the chart for both ends of your time range and compare the lagna.
Why the lagna is so sensitive to time
The lagna is the point of the zodiac rising over the eastern horizon at the moment and place of birth. The sky turns round the Earth once a day, so the whole zodiac passes the horizon in 24 hours: 15° an hour, on average one degree every four minutes and one sign (30°) in about two hours. The rate is not even — depending on the sign and the latitude, a degree takes between roughly 1.5 and 6 minutes — but the scale is always minutes. The Moon moves about 13° a day, the Sun about 1°: the lagna is the fastest point of the chart, and the only one that a clock error of a few minutes can move.
How often it matters
We counted it with the engine on several thousand random charts (1950–2009, five cities in India and Europe). About 6–7% of births have the lagna within 1° of a sign border, and about 13% within 2°. What matters in practice is how large the doubt about the time is:
| Doubt about the time | Lagna sign changes | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| ±4 minutes | 6–7% of charts | 1 in 15 |
| ±10 minutes | 15–18% of charts | 1 in 6 |
| ±15 minutes | 24–28% of charts | 1 in 4 |
So a time given “to the quarter hour” leaves a quarter of charts without a certain lagna, while a time taken from a certificate to the minute leaves almost none.
Where the doubt comes from
Family memory rounds to five, ten and fifteen minutes. A hospital may record the start of labour, the delivery or the moment the document was written. A clock in the delivery room could run a few minutes off. A summer-time or time-zone mistake is worse: an hour of error moves the lagna by about 15°, half a sign (the calculator takes the historical time zone of the birth place, but the time must be the local time of that day, summer time included). The place matters too: a degree of longitude (about 65–110 km, depending on the latitude), shifts the lagna exactly like four minutes on the clock. Last, the lagna degree depends on the ayanamsha: between Lahiri and Raman the lagna sign differs in about 5% of charts — one more reason why programs disagree.
What stays reliable
The Moon travels about half a degree an hour and changes sign every two and a quarter days, so a ten-minute doubt changes the Moon sign in about one birth in 160. The nakshatra and the order of the dashas follow the Moon, and the start dates of the periods move by weeks, not by years: ten minutes shift the dasha dates by up to about seven or eight weeks (for the longest, the twenty-year Venus period). The signs of the Sun and of the slow planets do not depend on the minutes at all. What does depend on them is everything counted from the lagna: the houses, the lagna lord, the navamsha and the other divisional charts, readings of career and marriage by the 10th and 7th houses.
What to do: five steps
1. Find the best source of the time. A birth certificate or a hospital record, to the minute, beats memory. Ask whether it is the moment of birth or of something else, and write down the place and the time zone of that day.
2. Cast the chart for both ends of the doubt. In the free chart calculator enter the time minus the doubt, then plus: if you are unsure by ten minutes, 08:20 and 08:40 for a time of 08:30. Compare the lagna.
3. Same sign at both ends? Then the doubt does not touch the houses, and the chart can be read — only the fine divisional charts stay open.
4. Different signs? Then there are two candidate charts. Read both and compare with what happened: the sequence of the big events against the dashas is how rectification works. Until then, rely on what does not depend on the minutes (the previous section).
5. Do not pick the more pleasant chart. The lagna that “sounds right” or promises more is a bad reason; events with dates are a good one.
Junction, not verdict
Tradition speaks of sandhi, the junction between two signs, and astrologers are careful with a lagna in the first or last degrees. That is caution about the data: the position says nothing about the person, only that the chart rests on a fragile number. A sign border is not a flaw of the chart. It is a reason to check the time once more before reading the houses.
