Work and calling: what Jyotish looks at

Work is one of the main themes people bring to us: when will I find a job, should I change it, what work is right for me. In India the question is often “naukri kab lagegi?”. Jyotish looks at it through the 10th house, its lord, the amatyakaraka and the divisional chart of career, the dashamsha. Timing comes from dashas and transits. Here is how it works and where the honest limit lies.

In short

  • The 10th house is profession and standing; the 6th is service and daily work; the 2nd and 11th are income.
  • Jaimini's amatyakaraka and the dashamsha (D10) refine the nature of the work.
  • Timing: the dashas of the 10th lord and planets linked to it, the transits of Saturn and Jupiter.
  • A chart describes tendencies and periods, not a particular post or salary.
  • “Should I change jobs now?” is best asked as a prashna.

The indicators of a profession

The 10th house is karma in the sense of one's work: profession, status, what a person is known for. Its sign, the planets in it and above all its lord show the direction. The 6th house is daily work, service and competition; the 2nd and 11th are income and gains. Among the planets, tradition looks to Saturn for work and discipline, the Sun for authority and position, Mercury for trade, words and reckoning, and Jupiter for knowledge and guidance.

The amatyakaraka and the dashamsha

In the Jaimini system the amatyakaraka — the planet with the second-highest degree — shows the path of achievement; more on the chara karakas in the article on the atmakaraka. The dashamsha (D10) is the divisional chart of career: its lagna and 10th house refine the setting in which work goes more easily. The dashamsha changes about every 12 minutes, so it needs an exact birth time.

“When will I find a job?”

The window is found as for any “when”: the periods of the 10th lord, planets in the 10th and 6th houses, the amatyakaraka, and planets linked with the 2nd and 11th houses. Jupiter's transit through the 10th house or its aspect on the 10th lord often coincides with new opportunities; Saturn's transit with more responsibility and growth through effort. More on the method in how Jyotish answers “when?”.

“What work suits me?”

A chart describes not a job title but the nature of the work: with people or with systems, in public view or behind the scenes, on one's own or within an organisation. A strong Mercury pulls towards words and numbers, a strong Mars towards action and technology, Venus towards beauty and agreements, Jupiter towards knowledge and teaching, Saturn towards long projects and structure. The conclusion comes from the 10th house, its lord, the amatyakaraka and the dashamsha together.

What a chart will not tell you

A chart will not name a company, a post or a sum, and it does not replace skills, the market or a person's own decision. The economy, education and circumstances shift the timing, and an honest reading takes that into account. We give no financial advice and no promises of employment.

How to ask JyotiSoft

The JyotiSoft bot has the topics “When will I find a job?”, “Change jobs or stay” and “Calling and life purpose”. The answer is built from the 10th house, its lord, the dashamsha and your dashas, with an explanation of its grounds. For a yes-or-no decision right now, prashna fits better.

Questions

Which house is responsible for work?
The 10th — profession and standing; the 6th — daily work and service; the 2nd and 11th — income.
What is the dashamsha?
The D10 divisional chart for career. It is read together with the birth chart and needs a birth time accurate to minutes.
Naukri kab lagegi — can a chart say when I will get a job?
It can show the periods when work is an active theme. The exact date and the outcome of an interview are not fixed by the chart.
Should I change jobs now?
For such a decision prashna is convenient: an answer from the moment of the question. You can ask it in the bot.
