How Jyotish answers “when?”

“When?” is the question astrologers hear most: when marriage, work, a move, when things will get easier. Jyotish answers it better than many systems because it has the dashas — a calendar of life's periods. But the answer is a window of likelihood, not a date on the calendar. Here is how it is found.

In short

  • Dashas set the years: a theme is active while a planet linked to it runs its period.
  • Antardashas narrow the window to months.
  • Transits of Jupiter and Saturn “switch on” a period and refine the months.
  • Prashna answers a specific question from the moment it is asked.
  • A good timing question is “in which years is this theme active”, not “give me a date”.

Three layers of time

Dashas are the main calendar: 120 years divided into periods of nine planets, each bringing the themes of the houses it rules and occupies. Antardashas divide every period into nine parts lasting from a few months to three years. Transits are the planets' current motion: Jupiter crosses a sign in about a year, Saturn in two and a half; when they touch the relevant house or its lord, the promise of the period is “switched on”.

How timing is found, step by step

1. Identify the house of the theme: marriage — the 7th, work — the 10th, home and moving — the 4th and 12th, children — the 5th. 2. Find the planets linked to that house: its lord, planets in it, the karaka (Venus for marriage, Saturn and the Sun for work). 3. See which dashas and antardashas of those planets run in the coming years. 4. Check the transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the house and its lord in those periods. Where more conditions meet, the window is more likely.

Prashna: an answer from the moment of the question

When the question is specific — “will I get this job?”, “should I move this year?” — tradition uses prashna: a chart for the moment the question is asked. It is read by its own rules and works well for yes-or-no decisions and near-term timing. In the JyotiSoft bot prashna is a separate kind of question.

What is reliable and what is not

Reliable: which years are linked with a theme, when periods begin and end, when a difficult transit is over. Less reliable: the month, if the birth time is inexact. Unreliable: the exact day of an event. If someone names a wedding date from a single chart, that is not Jyotish but a promise.

How to ask about timing

It is more useful to ask “in which years is work an active theme for me, and what should I do then?” than “give me the date I'll be hired”. The first question gives a plan, the second a reason for disappointment. For a specific decision, prashna fits better.

Common “when” questions

Marriage: when marriage comes in the chart. Work: work and calling in the chart. The end of a hard period: the dates of Sade Sati and the change of mahadasha. A good day to start something: the muhurat section.

Questions

Can an astrologer name an exact date?
No. They can name the periods when an event is more likely. The exact date depends on people's decisions and circumstances.
What matters more — dashas or transits?
Dashas: they set what is possible in the period at all. Transits only switch on what the dasha promises.
Do I need an exact birth time for timing?
For the house of the theme, yes; the dashas themselves depend on the Moon's degree and are usually reliable with an approximate time.
What is prashna?
A chart for the moment of the question. It is used for specific decisions and near-term timing.
