Mangal dosha (Manglik)
Mangal dosha is Mars placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. It is weighed when matching couples: Mars in the houses of marriage and family adds heat to a relationship. The dosha has many classical cancellations and does not by itself rule out marriage.
In short
- Dosha houses: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 from the lagna (in several schools also from the Moon and Venus).
- Formally about half of all people have it from the lagna alone and about nine in ten from at least one of lagna, Moon and Venus.
- Cancellations: Mars in its own sign or exaltation, Jupiter's aspect, the same dosha in the partner and more.
- The decision is made from the whole chart and the partner's chart.
- JyotiSoft checks the dosha and its cancellations by the chosen school.
What Mangal dosha is
Mars is the planet of energy, struggle and passion. When it stands in houses tied to marriage and family (7th — partner, 8th — longevity of marriage, 2nd — family, 4th — home, 12th — bed and expenses, 1st — the person), tradition speaks of Mangal dosha. A person with such a chart is called Manglik.
How it is counted
The main count is from the lagna. Many schools also check from the Moon and from Venus and consider the dosha stronger when confirmed from several points. Some schools exclude the 2nd house, others the 1st. Because of these differences, the same chart can be Manglik for one astrologer and not for another.
Classical cancellations
The dosha is considered cancelled or weakened if: Mars is in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exaltation (Capricorn); Mars is aspected by or conjunct Jupiter; the partner also has Mangal dosha; Mars is in certain signs for certain houses (in the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo, for example); the ascendant is Cancer or Leo, for which Mars is the yoga karaka. The list is far from complete.
What it means in practice
Even an uncancelled dosha is not a ban on marriage but an indication: there is a lot of energy in the relationship, and it needs direction — into shared projects, sport and work rather than arguments. Couples where both partners are Manglik are traditionally considered balanced.
How common it is
Mars stands in one of the six dosha houses about half of the time, so the dosha is a statistic, not a rarity. We counted it with the engine on several thousand random charts (1950–2009, five cities in India and Europe): from the lagna Mars was in a dosha house in about 49% of charts, from the Moon in about 50% and from Venus in about 54%. Counting from all three points, about 87% of people have the dosha by at least one of them, and only about 13% — one in eight — by all three. This is why astrologers who count differently disagree so often, and why “manglik” on its own is not a finding. What matters is the strength of Mars, the cancellations and the partner's chart.
A calm order of checks
1. Count by one rule. From the lagna, and from the Moon and Venus only if your school does; write down which. In the free chart calculator the table gives the house of Mars and the signs to count from.
2. Look for cancellations. Mars in its own sign or exaltation, Jupiter's aspect, the lagna for which Mars is the yoga karaka. One cancellation is enough to treat the dosha as weakened.
3. Look at the partner's chart. The same dosha on both sides is traditionally a balance; the condition of Mars (its sign, dignity, aspects) says more than the bare house.
4. Look at the timing. The dosha is held to act most in the periods and sub-periods of Mars (see dashas), not through the whole life.
5. Decide on the whole chart — the 7th house and its lord, Venus and Jupiter, and the 36 gunas of the couple. A single count is not a reason to call off a wedding, and a “removal” offered before these steps is worth a second opinion: ask which rule is being cancelled and why.
How JyotiSoft checks it
JyotiSoft determines Mangal dosha and its cancellations by the calculation profile (school), not by a single rule of thumb, and weighs it together with the 36 gunas of Ashtakuta and the 7th house of both charts.
