Muhurat — choosing a day for an event
Each event in Jyotish has its own rules: the nakshatras it favours, the weekdays it avoids, the periods when it is not done at all. Here they are event by event, together with the nearest favourable days from the same calendar the JyotiSoft app uses.
| Name | In short |
|---|---|
| Wedding | Vivaha: stable and gentle nakshatras, no Chaturmas, Venus and Jupiter visible |
| Moving into a home | Griha Pravesha: six lunar months, no Sundays or Tuesdays, fixed and soft nakshatras |
| Buying property | Bhumi-kraya: only Thursday or Friday, fixed and soft nakshatras |
| Buying a car | Vahana: moving and light nakshatras, never on Tuesday or Saturday |
| Starting a business | Pushya and the Uttaras, Thursday, a waxing start |
| Signing a contract | Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, Uttara Phalguni; Wednesday or Thursday |
| Travel | Yatra: the journey table of Muhurta Chintamani for every daylight nakshatra |
| Starting study | Vidyarambha: light and moving nakshatras, the days of Mercury and Jupiter |
What muhurat is
Muhurat is the branch of Jyotish that chooses the moment to begin something. The idea is simple: choose a favourable time to begin. The day is assessed through the five limbs of the panchang — tithi, weekday, nakshatra, yoga and karana — and each event weighs them in its own way. A wedding needs stable, gentle nakshatras; a journey needs light, moving ones; buying land needs the days of Jupiter and Venus.
Why one page per event
The classical texts, above all Muhurta Chintamani, give each undertaking its own chapter. A day that is excellent for signing a contract can be closed to a wedding because it falls in Chaturmas, the four months when weddings are not held. That is why every page below shows that event's own table: which nakshatras count for it, which weekdays are ruled out and which periods ban it outright.
How the dates are calculated
Each page lists the nearest favourable days for the next three months, refreshed daily. They come from the JyotiSoft month calendar: the panchang at local sunrise, the event's rules and the period bans — Chaturmas, Pitru Paksha, Kharmas, an intercalary month, combust Venus or Jupiter. Days are scored, not just filtered: a recommended nakshatra and weekday add points, Bhadra karana or an empty tithi takes them away.
What the general calendar cannot know
A day can be good for everyone and still poor for you. Classical muhurat also checks the day against the birth Moon — Tarabala and Chandrabala — and for a wedding or a move chooses the hour by the rising sign. The app does this from your chart. Also avoid the day's Rahu kalam for the start itself.
