A mantra is a traditional practice of speech and attention. It is not a medical or financial treatment and promises no outcome.
The words
Grām is the seed of Jupiter. Gurave is the dative of guru, “to the teacher”: in Jyotish Jupiter is called Guru or Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods. The ending -ave is the regular dative of nouns in -u, so it is gurave and not guruya. Meaning: “Om, homage to the Guru.”
How to say grām and gurave
Say a clear g, as in “go”, then at once the tapped r and a long open vowel: graam, with a soft nasal hum after it. The g is not aspirated, so no puff of air follows it.
In gurave all vowels are short and the final e sounds like the “ay” of “say” without gliding: gu-ra-ve. Keep the three syllables equal in length.
Jupiter in Jyotish
Jupiter signifies wisdom, teachers, learning, children, faith and good fortune; it is the great benefic. A strong Jupiter is read as breadth of view and generosity. Ank Jyotish gives number 3 to Jupiter and reads it as teaching, growth and good counsel.
Day and practice
Its day is Thursday, Guruvāra or Brihaspativāra. Thursday morning is the usual choice, and yellow is the colour tradition links to the day. As with the others, a calm count of 108 on a mala is customary, and fewer, slower repetitions are fine to begin with.
