A mantra is a traditional practice of speech and attention. It is not a medical or financial treatment and promises no outcome.
What a bija mantra is
A bija is a “seed”: a single syllable that carries no dictionary meaning of its own. In the tradition each graha has its seed sound, such as hrām for the Sun or śrām for the Moon. The seed is placed between Om and the graha's name in the dative, followed by namaḥ, “homage”. That gives the pattern of all nine mantras on this site: Om, seed, name-to, namah.
The shape is the same for every graha, so learning one teaches the rhythm of all. What changes is the seed syllable, the name and the weekday. The table above lists the nine in the order of the numbers one to nine, the same order the numerology book follows.
How the nine are ordered
The numbers come from Ank Jyotish, the Indian system of numbers: the Sun is 1, the Moon 2, Jupiter 3, Rahu 4, Mercury 5, Venus 6, Ketu 7, Saturn 8 and Mars 9. Your date of birth gives a root number and a destiny number, and each belongs to one graha. That is why this section is arranged by number and not by the order of the weekdays.
You can look up your own numbers in the numerology calculator, then open that graha's page from the table above. Each page stands on its own, so you can read only the one you need.
Saying a mantra respectfully
Traditional guidance is simple: sit comfortably, breathe slowly and say the mantra at an even, quiet pace, aloud or in a whisper. A common count is 108 repetitions, one turn of a mala, but a smaller number said with attention is better than a long count said in a hurry. Many people keep one weekday for a graha and say it at the same time of day.
The mantras are a practice, not a prescription. Nothing here replaces medical, legal or financial advice, and no page promises a result.
