A mantra is a traditional practice of speech and attention. It is not a medical or financial treatment and promises no outcome.
The words
After Om comes śrām, the seed syllable of the Moon. Candrāya is the dative of candra, “to the Moon”, a word that means “shining” and is also a common name. Namaḥ closes with “homage”. The sense is: “Om, homage to the Moon.”
The Moon is the fastest-moving graha and changes shape every night, which is why the tradition links it with the mind and its moods. The mantra is meant to be said gently.
How to say śrām and candrāya
The first sound is ś, the palatal sibilant, close to English sh; follow it at once with the tapped r and a long vowel: shraam, then the soft nasal hum. Do not put a vowel between sh and r.
In candrāya the c is “ch” as in “chat”, the cluster ndr is said smoothly (chan-draa) and the long ā carries the stress. Finish with the short ya and the faint echo of namaḥ.
The Moon in Jyotish
The Moon signifies the mind, feeling, the mother, comfort and the public. In Jyotish the Moon's sign is the main sign of a chart, and the Moon sets the nakshatra and the Vimshottari period a person starts life in. Ank Jyotish reads number 2, the Moon's number, as sensitivity, receptivity and care.
Day and practice
Its day is Monday, Somavāra in Sanskrit, from Soma, another name for the Moon. Evening, when the Moon is up, is the time many manuals suggest, and a calm, low voice suits it. 108 repetitions on a mala are customary; a few slow ones are a good start.
