A mantra is a traditional practice of speech and attention. It is not a medical or financial treatment and promises no outcome.
The words
Krām is the seed of Mars. Maṅgalāya is the dative of maṅgala, “to Mangala”: the word means “auspicious, good fortune”, and it is also the name of the graha, Mars, in Jyotish. Namaḥ is “homage”. The sense: “Om, homage to Mars.”
How to say krām and maṅgalāya
Say k with no puff of air, then the tapped r and a long vowel: kraam, and the soft hum through the nose. The k is plain, as in “skill”, not the breathy k of “kill”.
In maṅgalāya the sign ṅ is the “ng” of “sing”, followed by a hard g: man-ga-laa-ya. The third syllable is long and carries the stress.
Mars in Jyotish
Mars signifies energy, courage, action, siblings, land and the drive to compete. A strong Mars is read as initiative and stamina. Ank Jyotish gives it number 9, the last of the nine, read as drive, finishing things and a willingness to act.
Day and practice
Its day is Tuesday, Maṅgalavāra, which names it directly: the day of Mangala. Red is the colour tradition links to the day. The mantra is said at an even pace: the energy of Mars is directed, not rushed. A count of 108 on a mala is customary, and a handful of repetitions is enough to start.
