A mantra is a traditional practice of speech and attention. It is not a medical or financial treatment and promises no outcome.
The words
Prām is the seed of Saturn. Śanaye is the dative of śani, “to Shani”, a name often taken to mean “the slow-moving one”, since Saturn is the slowest of the visible grahas. Namaḥ is “homage”. The sense: “Om, homage to Saturn.”
How to say prām and śanaye
Say p with no puff of air, so that a hand held before the lips feels almost nothing, then the tapped r and a long vowel: praam, and the nasal hum. The unaspirated p is the main difference from English, where p is usually breathy.
In śanaye start with ś (close to sh); all the vowels are short and the final e is the “ay” of “say”: sha-na-ye.
Saturn in Jyotish
Saturn signifies discipline, time, labour, limits, patience and what is built slowly. It is a strict teacher rather than a punisher: its lessons come through duty and delay. Ank Jyotish gives it number 8, read as persistence, responsibility and long effort.
Day and practice
Its day is Saturday, Śanivāra, from the graha's own name, and dark blue is the colour linked to it. Tradition values regularity above intensity for Saturn: a short mantra at the same hour every Saturday is better than a long one said rarely. 108 on a mala is customary.
