A mantra is a traditional practice of speech and attention. It is not a medical or financial treatment and promises no outcome.

The words

Om opens the mantra. Hrām is the Sun's seed syllable: it has no dictionary meaning and is said as one sound. Sūryāya is “to Surya” (the dative of sūrya, the Sun), and namaḥ is “bow” or “homage”. Together: “Om, homage to the Sun.”

Surya is the first graha and the one the other eight are counted from. The mantra is therefore usually the first one a beginner meets, and it is short enough to learn in one sitting.

How to say hrām and sūryāya

Say h with a light breath, then go straight into a tapped r (the tongue flicks once, as in Italian or Spanish) and stretch the vowel: hraam. End the syllable with a soft hum through the nose, the anusvara, about as long as the vowel.

In sūryāya the first vowel is long (soor), the second syllable also long (yaa), the last short. The stress is even: Soor-yaa-ya. Namaḥ ends on a faint echo of the vowel, na-ma-ha, never a hard h.

The Sun in Jyotish

The Sun stands for the soul, the father, authority, vitality and reputation. It is the natural significator of the self, and the graha of number 1, which Ank Jyotish reads as leadership and new beginnings. The mantra is traditionally associated with confidence and clarity of purpose.

Day and practice

Its day is Sunday, the day named for the Sun in India as in Europe. Tradition suggests morning, facing the rising sun, but the point is a quiet moment you can repeat. A mala count of 108 is customary; three to eleven repetitions are enough to begin.
