Mercury (Budha) in Vedic astrology

What Mercury signifies

Mercury is the karaka of intelligence and communication. It shows how a person thinks, speaks, learns and bargains. Writing, accounting, programming, journalism, brokering, humour and any kind of exchange fall under it. In the body: the nervous system, the skin and speech.

By nature Mercury is a benefic, but it easily takes on the character of the planets it sits with: beside Jupiter and Venus it is gentle and clever, beside Mars and Saturn sharp and anxious. That is why the classics count it as a malefic when it is joined with papa grahas.

A strong and a weak Mercury

Mercury is the only graha whose sign of exaltation is also its own sign: Virgo (exalted up to 15°). It also owns Gemini and is debilitated in Pisces. Mercury in the 1st house gains directional strength: quick speech, a youthful look, business sense.

Mercury never moves more than about 28° from the Sun, so it is often combust. Budha-Aditya yoga (Sun with Mercury) helps only if Mercury is not too close to the Sun.

Mercury retrograde

About three times a year Mercury appears to move backwards. In Jyotish a retrograde graha gains chesta bala (motional strength), but its themes turn back to the past: renegotiated contracts, repairs, old acquaintances. The next period runs from 24 October to 13 November 2026 (JyotiSoft calculation, sidereal). Retrograde is not a ban — it is advice to double-check details.

The Mercury dasha

The Mercury mahadasha lasts 17 years: study, business, negotiation, writing and digital work. A strong Mercury brings money through intellect and contacts; an afflicted one brings busyness, worry and a need to protect the nerves.
