Yogas

Vesi, Vosi and Ubhayachari yogas

These solar yogas look at the signs either side of the Sun. A planet in the 2nd from the Sun forms Vesi, in the 12th Vosi, and on both sides Ubhayachari. They are among the most common yogas, because Mercury and Venus stay close to the Sun.

How the JyotiSoft engine checks it

Vesi: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in the 2nd sign from the Sun. Vosi: one of them in the 12th sign from the Sun. Ubhayachari: both, and then neither Vesi nor Vosi is counted. The Moon, Rahu and Ketu do not count, and the lagna point is not a planet (JyotiSoft corrected the library on both points).

How often it forms

Vesi (2nd from the Sun)26.9% of charts
Vosi (12th from the Sun)29.5% of charts
Ubhayachari (both sides of the Sun)32.9% of charts

Share of 3,000 charts computed by the JyotiSoft engine for random births (1950–2010, any hour, places from 40° S to 60° N). A common yoga is not a lesser one, but its presence alone says little; what matters is its strength in the whole chart.

What they give

The Sun is the self and its authority; planets beside it describe how that authority is expressed. Vesi, with a planet after the Sun, is linked to speech, effort and balanced fortune. Vosi, with a planet before it, to skill, learning and generosity. Ubhayachari, with both, to a capable, well-supported person who can carry responsibility.

The planet decides the flavour

A benefic beside the Sun gives warmth, eloquence or wisdom to the self-expression; a malefic gives drive, sternness or endurance. Mercury and Venus account for many of these yogas, because they never move far from the Sun, which is why one of the three forms in about nine charts out of ten in our sample.

How to read them

Treat these yogas as descriptions of temperament rather than as rare blessings. Read them with the Sun's strength, its house and the houses the neighbouring planets rule for your ascendant. That turns a common label into a specific statement about your chart.

Questions

Why are Vesi and Vosi yogas so common?
Mercury and Venus always stay close to the Sun, so one of them often stands in the sign before or after it. In our engine's sample each forms in more than half of all charts.
Does the Moon count for Vesi or Vosi?
No. The classical definitions use only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.
What is Ubhayachari yoga?
Planets on both sides of the Sun, in the 2nd and the 12th from it: Vesi and Vosi together.
