Viparita raja yoga (Harsha, Sarala, Vimala)

How often it forms

Share of 3,000 charts computed by the JyotiSoft engine for random births (1950–2010, any hour, places from 40° S to 60° N). A common yoga is not a lesser one, but its presence alone says little; what matters is its strength in the whole chart.

The three lords for each ascendant

For a house in Scorpio or Aquarius the engine takes the stronger of its two lords: Mars or Ketu for Scorpio, Saturn or Rahu for Aquarius. This co-lordship comes from the Jaimini tradition; many Parashari astrologers use Mars and Saturn alone.

The three forms

Harsha (6th lord in the 6th) is linked to health, victory over rivals and happiness won through work. Sarala (8th lord in the 8th) to longevity, fearlessness and resources from crises or research. Vimala (12th lord in the 12th) to independence, frugality and freedom from the losses the 12th usually brings. Each describes a house that handles its own trouble.

What makes it strong

The lord should be reasonably strong in its own house, which it usually is, since a planet in its own sign is dignified. The yoga shows most in the dasha of that lord and often in hard times: people with it are frequently the ones who thrive in a crisis. Malefic aspects on the house can still bring the house's events, but the person tends to come out ahead.

A note on the broad reading

Many websites count Viparita raja yoga whenever a dusthana lord sits in any dusthana. That broad version appears in a large share of charts. We keep to the strict form, where each lord rules and occupies the same house, and say so, so the pages and the bot reports agree.
